I am definitely not going to defend purgatory.

However, I herard an explaination about it that ran along these lines...Heaven is perfect, and no sin can enter. So what happens when you die, assuming that you haven't been forgiven everything?

That's where purgatory comes in. It allows for a person to be cleansed of their sins so they can enter heaven.

Once again, I am not saying it exists...just saying that in that context...it sort of makes sense.

Good!

That was a nice explanation.

A lot of Catholics make the mistake of trying to justify the existance of Purgatory from Scripture -- the verses they use are roundabout as pretzels.

Catholics believe in Purgatory because of the Saints. They took a tour and saw the place and came back and told everyone about it.

There are a few funny things about Purgatory though. On Earth your penance and suffering can be used on your own behalf. But in Purgatory you are in a causal vacuum -- your own suffering is useless. However, the penance of those still alive on Earth can bring amelioration and relief to those in Purgatory.

A favorite passtime of many a Saint has been to do penance for the relief of those in Purgatory. It is typical that when a Saint dies that they are welcomed into Heaven by all the former inmates from Purgatory who were rescued by that Saint's Prayers and Penances.

This is one very unfortunate factor of Protestant doctrine -- that they do not believe in Purgatory and so they do not pray for their own dead. there must be billions of Protestants rotting in Purgatory without a single prayer. Well, sometimes ex-Prot Converts will say prayers and do penance for the Prots in Purgatory -- but many Catholics simply feel that the Orange Bellies are getting what they asked for and save their prayers for Catholics who may have enjoyed Mardi Gra too much.

Sorry but we are not saved by the blood and humiliation of a man. But we are saved by Yeshua. As far as your saints. I would suggest the catholics start testing spirits. These are truly demons. I dont Mary is going to come down and say. Little Jacinta here is a knife and a lighter. So have at yourself dont eat and look like a fool out in public so you can be the messiah. Nope sorry that was a demon she seen. Yeshua is the only saviour there was is and will ever be.
