Got a Dell paper, they have a 2.20 celeron for $499 cdn.

What are the best but cheapest and NOT MESSABLE(Crashes, Errors, etc) in North America?

Dell, Mac, Compaq, HP, Celeron, etc?

The cpu I have is seriously messing up my mind...

Oh yeah, our TV just broke(the light inside popped like a flashlight would) ,so we cant play mario kart 64 LOL

Dells are decent but use proprietary power supplies. Gateways are popular in the US. I don't like HP/Compaq.
 
I have a gateway. The only problems I had is my CPU broke but I now have a new one because of a three year warrenty. They are very good in service and I would reccomend them. Or if you are a hardware geek like myself get one at a local but reputable dealer.
 
I'm really happy with my Dell that I got last year. I haven't had to reformat, though I probabally could. All of my hardware is working fine and it's extremely easy to upgrade (you don't even need a screwdirver).
 
Dell is quite good. I have had little problems with them in the past. But now I prefer to build my own, which is cheaper and I get to choose exactly what parts I want.
 
Corpfox if you have a warrenty I would suggest a new hard drive. Or if you are content on buying a new one well there are lots of suggestions. Or buy a new hard drive whatever makes you happy.

I've been running on a Dell Dimension 8200 for almost a year now. The DVD-ROM drive sucked and I couldn't watch LOTR for almost 6 months because new firmware had to be developed to cope with the copious copyright countermeasures. Now it works just fine. Dell's tech support has been fairly good to me, although I have heard horror stories. Their website is fairly well laid out for getting self-serve tech support, including BIOS updates and whatnot.
 
So THAT'S why I can't watch LOTR on my Dell laptop. Argggh.

I have been using Dell's at work for years and years now. They are great machines and their support is great. But around 1999 or so, Dell started using integrated parts (motherboard with built-in video/sound/etc.) and that made them a bit less appealing to me. But they are still good machines.

At home, I use Compaq. One is over 5 years old and still in active duty. The one bad thing is internally, things are cramped. I really like the latest Compaq I have. They have made the case so much easier to access and everything is now wide open inside. The only issue I have with Compaq is they use some type of proprietary BIOS or something. They don't let you access your BIOS so you are stuck with the internal factory presets. Compaq has now been purchased by HP and so I don't know if I'd get another Compaq.

My next may either be a Dell or a self-built computer.

One thing about buying a major brand computer is they usually do not have very good video cards for gaming. That's the first upgrade for me.
 
If you are going to want to play half life two, be warned that your computer better be at least 2.2 gh.

As that will be the minimum recommended speed of your computer. Any slower than that and you will experienced chopped gameplay. In fact, you may even experience it with that speed assuming the depth of a given scenario in the game.

As others have saud, custom building is the best way to go, and if you are like me and render, you will want to get dual processors. It is sometimes hard to find motherboards that support dual processing, if you need help finding one feel free to PM me.
 
I need a 2.2 ghz! I only have a 1.1. Then again the bible does say seek ye first the kingdom of God and he will answer our prayers. Ill be able to play after I pray!

Build your own. Seriously. It's fun, and it's like connecting lego pieces together. (AGP card goes in AGP slot, PCI card goes in PCI slot, etc.)

It's also cheaper.. a bit. And make sure you buy a GOOD POWER SUPPLY and GOOD RAM. those things can either make your system rock solid or BSOD heck. I prefer the rock solid part.

I have heard that the minimum for HL2 is 800mhz.
 
My next computer I will build myself. I am going to get one of the old alienware cases from antec. BTW does anyone know where to get the new alienware cases without buying a alienware?
 
Alienware used to use Antec/Cheiftec cases but their new design is proprietary and you can only get it from them
