Just curious, I'd like to see how many of you are Baptists. (Kidding, kidding).

Yes though, post away, let's see what this collective consciousness known as CGA thinks.

What i think isnt an option on there..lol.. well anyway..

I think that with anything like this there is no strict answer. If it has been a problem for you before you became a christian then you should not drink period. However drinking in moderation for me is fine. I will not get drunk though, that is wrong. But if i am going out i wont drink.. not because i dont trust myself but because i want to be an example and there may be people around that do have a problem with drink, and to set a chrsitian example like that wouldnt be good. I dunno if that makes sense...lol

I really don't like alchohol but nothing wrong with dinner wine. I don't drink for respect of my husband but I do like foo foo drinks and wine coolers which are low alchohol %. Drunkeness is bad though.

actually if memory serves a wine cooler has as much alcoholas a regular beer.

but of course my opinion on the matter is the same as Rizz's though I don't drink mainly because I've the membership covenant with my church says that I will abstain from alcoholic drink.

I'll raise my hand...I'm Baptist....but I love a nice glass of wine every now and then. Of course abusing anything is bad whether it is alcohol or something else. If the intent is to drink in order to get drunk, I have a problem with it. Otherwise, as long as you're over 21 if you're in the U.S., I don't have a problem with it.

Beer, beer, beer, beer, beer, beer, beer, beer, BEER wonderful beer, marvellous beer, glorious beer!

It just occurs to me that the majority of society, Christian or not, drink for simply that reason, to get drunk. Why? It makes them forget things they don't want to remember, it makes them "fit in", as an excuse to be social, or simply for the sake of getting drunk because it makes them "loosen up" aka act like an idiot.

Here's my opinion, and take it how you will, I think it has good spiritual basis, so perhaps both sides of this arguement can learn something and grow from the comments we give to one another.

Example: Let's say I have a friend who has never had a drink in his/her life before, so they do not know what it takes to be "drunk" for them. They do not know their personal tolerance, making it impossible to determine when they will be "drunk". Now, let's say this person has a very LOW tolerance, and one single beer makes them drunk. According to the opinions given on this board, as well as scriptural fact, their drunkness is a sin.

I think this certain instance falls into the "flee from the appearance of sin", because if your pastor (US, anyways, I'm aware some UK pastors have no problem with a chery or beer) or a deacon, or another church member walks into a pub and sees you sitting there, beer in hand, having a joyous time, one of two things will happen.

A) You both ignore one another, and pretend it never happened because you don't want it to get back to the church body that it "appeared" you were getting drunk or were drunk.

B) It WILL get back to the church body, passing along the thought that it may be okay to get drunk, influencing Christians that aren't mature in their faith, creating a whole lower-society of Christians who are okay with being drunk.

Another occurance could be one of those young Christians appearing at a bar, not yet having enough maturity in their faith to know when they've taken drinking too far, sees a rather mature Christian of their church body drinking/being drunk, they may take it as an endorsement, totally affecting the way they think.

Do not cause another brother to stumble, friends.

If for no other reason, I think of it like this...

Modern Christians have boycotts on video stores that sell or endorse pornos, as well as supermarkets or "superstores", and other "non-Christian" markets.

Why? Because Christians believe it is degrading the people of our society.

Now, how often do you flip on the TV to see a beer commercial with a pastor, deacon, or any Christian sitting there talking about how God gave them this beautiful drink to deal with their many infirmities. You don't. You see a well endowed woman bouncing across the screen, all over some young guy with a beer or a group of young people at a club or party. Now, any Christian sitting in the room will say, "Oh, that's terrible". (Lord have mercy, particularly Christian mothers..."That's just despicable how they depict women." heheheh...Mom...Gotta lover er')

So, my point is, why buy the beer/alcohol if the manufacturers of that drink portray people in that manner? Isn't THAT wrong?

I'm just not seeing how people overlook things like this everyday, and it's downright hypocritical if you ask me.

Another thing is....Even if you have one drink, one small amount of alcohol, your whole mind is changed. Reflexes slow, making you a hazard to yourself and others. (I don't care how many out htere may say, "oh! Designated Driver!!!!" There will be a point in time when one is not available, and someone may think they're fine because they had "just one".) Now not only is drinking endorsing secular views, degrading our society, leading Christians the wrong way, but it's also now a hazard to humans.

Review and pray over this, everyone, I'm just curious if this is my own personal conviction and prejudices or if God is really trying to use me to change people's hearts, and I honestly think, pray and hope for the latter.

I'm about to be 22 so it's legal for me to drink and for a while I was in the phase of drinking a lot because I could.
I have gotten drunk before (even before I was 21 I hate to say) and I have learned that drinking just to get drunk is rather silly. I have a pretty high tolerance level for most beer so I can put back a few before I have problems. I never drink in bars, only at homes with friends, and I don't drink to get drunk anymore, I drink because I just enjoy the drinks. I know most of that stuff doesn't taste very well, but some mixed drinks are good and some of the hard liqours I admit I really like.

Sex is used to sell everything nowadays from clothes to Doritos. All we can do is ignore that stuff the best we can and make our consumer decisions not based on how they sell stuff, because ad agencies use what works and sex works to sell products.
We should base our consumer decisions instead on the product itself.
I see no problem with drinking in moderation. Christ made water into wine and infact it was the best wine of the party! He never mentions him partaking but it shows him supplying. I drink maybe one beer or mixed drink at a party because I makes people a little more comfortable, I drink at family events because it makes my father (a non-christian) a little more comfortable. He seems to think of me as sometimes just being a goody two shoes just following the rules, when of course being a Christian isn't about rules but rather a relationship.
I guess to sum up my rambling let me say, that drinking in moderation is fine. Abide by the laws and be safe about how you drink. Don't get stupid and don't drink to get drunk not because of some moral conviction but also just because it's BORING. I mean all you do is sit there and drink while watching tv or something. And then you sit around a talk and laugh. You could just do that sober and have a better time.
So that's my take on alcohol if that made any sense. It's just personal thing that only you can decide really based on your relationship with God. Just do what you think he would want you doing from your knowledge of his presence based on your relationship with him.

Jeez - sometimes we're drinking because the alternative is having discussions like the two posts above when immersed in a group bonding situation!

Although I rarely drink, I believe what Jesus said, "It is not what enters into the mouth that defiles the man, but what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man." (-Matt. 15:11) I believe it's all about the heart, and the motive behind taking a drink. Something like wine can be blessed by Jesus for a wedding with his first miracle, but can also be used to corrupt the body as you'll find at most colleges on Friday night. I also think Paul nailed it when he said in Col. 2:16, "Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day." (ever have anyone look at you sideways for missing Sunday service? hehe)

But I agree with some earlier posts to protect those of our brethren that have weak consciences that might be defiled...and therefore abstain around them. (1 Cor. 8:7, 10:28-29)

Personally, when I was younger I used to drink because to subdue my inhibitions and fears around women, and also to 'fit in' with my peers. Now that those fears and inhibitions are gone (praise God), I have no need for it. So I can truly enjoy it now and then...a wine cooler here, a glass of wine there.

Having said all this, most of the time I prefer a good old Mountain Dew anyway!

They dont have mountain dew in England anymore, i think after that thing about it lowering your sperm count

You condoning outside-marrage sex???

Anyway, back to the original topic - yes i drink, and i enjoy it. Bourbon, beer, vodka, rum, pretty much anything - yes, im a piss head (joke).

I live in australia, so the legal age for buying alcohol is 18... Cant wait till my 18th... no more dreading raids from the cops on my fav pubs n such... ONLY 3 MONTHS NOW!!!!

anyway, i dont see a problem in drinking, or getting drunk for that matter. Unless you do it all the time. Then it is a problem... When i say drunk, i mean drunk enough to have some fun, and be happy, not so drunk that you are passing out and throwing up, that is too far. But i dont see a problem in getting a little drunk occasionaly, there is no harm in that... you still know what you are doing, and what you are saying, even if you are a little more out of it than usual...

Ive been totaly smashed before, and its not good to lost control of yourself. that is too far... But if you are somewhat pissed, who cares... As long as you and everyone else is having a good time, then its all good...
