Baptism IS it nessassary for Salvation

I have been runing around on this for the past two weeks, so I thought I would throw it out here.

Do you need to be baptised to be saved?

Or is it by faith alone

I know it has to do with obedience.

I think we should be obedient and be baptised as commanded in the bible, but is it nessassary for salvation?

In my opinion, no. For salvation, all we need to do is believe that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, and invite the Lord to be in your heart.

Although I was baptised, I do not really think it is a required item. Going to church, reading the Bible, etc. aren't needed to have salvation either [tho they might be a good idea, :p]
 
Agreed.

Phantom said it all. Jesus said the thief was going to paradise, and there's no way he was baptised while on the cross. So... necessary, no. Recommended to strengthen your own relationship with God and show your obedience, yes.
 
John 5:24 “I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.

John 6:29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

In Ephesians 2:8-9 says: For by grace you have been saved, through faith and not from yourselves, it is a gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast.

Luke 23:40-43

41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”

He wasn’t baptized. Baptism is more a symbol to show that we except Jesus Christ as our personal Savior. Meaning the old was washed away (or your sins were washed away). And a new emerged.
I was Baptized as a Baby did that mean I was a Christian? No, I didn’t say yes to Christ until I was 21 years old.
 
Ditto on everyone's point! It is our first step of obedience after Salvation.

In Mark 16:16 looking at context really doesn't shed light, as far as looking at the surrounding verses. That verse out of context would seem to say that baptism is necessary for salvation. However, if we examine that verse in the context of Scripture as a whole, and what God's Word teaches about salvation, that is not the case. The thief on the cross is the prime example. The link at the end of my post seems to expound on that verse well.

I like what they say at our church when they baptize, "I baptize you in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Buried in the likeness of His death, (while immersing them), raised in the likeness of His resurrection. (as they bring them out of the water)." So this also becomes a picture not only of Jesus Sacrifice for us, but our new life in Him.

I think it would be interesting to do a study on Jesus' baptism. He was our example, so I believe it is necessary in the step of obedience, but I bet it is also rich with other meanings. I wonder if there is Old Testament prophsy, cerimonies, or foreshadowing in some regard of the implications of His baptism. We see that the Father is well pleased with the act of baptism!

Just regular baptism is a PUBLIC testiomony....

I am gettin' baptized soon... My dad can't make it this easter, so next time.
