Better than DVD Ripping...

I used to use DVD Rippers to put my DVDs onto my computer but could never really get the results I wanted, either the quality stank, or the sound and video were off...in a quest to find a better DVD ripper, I was informed via How-To Geek that my often used VLC player could record video with their most current release 1.0... I tested it and the quality is perfect and video and sound are together perfectly... It saves them in MPEG, and a minute video was about 35MBs...not too bad really, that puts an hour and a half movie at 3GBs, which is much better than using DVD Fab and DVD Shink, and the quality seems to be perfect, not compressed at all, for 3GBs that is awesome! 2 reasons I am putting this up here: 1, to inform you all of this awesome feature, 2, to know if anyone has found a DVD ripper that rips faster than 1x (like recording in real time) that works right...or if I have found the best option... (I have used MANY rippers and decrypters)...also...even though 3GBs is still too steep...that is 30 movies per 100GBs...and I only have about 300GBs for movies...and I have a lot more than 90 DVDs... I just wonder how all the pirates/file-sharers convert their DVDs to a perfect 700MB AVI...

EDIT: I found that playing around with Any Video Converter you can take the minute of video down to 7MBs pretty easily...been using AVC for a long time, it's a good one... 7x90=630MBs per movie... :D

Dude, thank you so much! this is exactly what I wanted to know. I have loved VLC for many years now. I have gotten so tired of my kids ruining their DvDs. I am gonna use this to stream them to my 360 so they can watch from a video library instead of swapping discs every morning.

xbox360+PlayOnMediaServer+VLC FTW

Man, I know what you mean, I have many ruined children DVDs...my first test was with the very first Veggietales DVD...

Good idea:

It is great to just sit there and record anything running through VLC, however, if you want to record while you are sleeping or don't want to watch the movie, you might get stuck with a 10 hour video for a 2 hour movie, so if you use DVD fab to get the DVD on your HDD then pick out the VOB file that is the main movie, play and record it, you can be sure that is all you will record...still, you might still have to do some editing if you want it perfect...

EDIT: The files VLC records live to import into WMM without any issues...

EDIT 2: And the recording will stop when it reaches the end of a chapter/title...

Most of the better encoders allow you to set either the bit rate or a final file size. When I did rips in the past it was literally a matter of inserting a disk, selecting the chapters and clicking a button. I think it was something like 40 minutes to rip a 2 hour disk... With processors nowadays you could probably bring that down closer to 20 minutes.

I don't buy DVDs so I haven't done that in a long time.

Well, using a Mac, handbrake works amazingly well, but handbrake for Windows is rather lame...I think I am just going to record live with VLC...

EDIT: Testing Handbrake for Windows with their most recent release it is a little bit better, for converting, but for ripping, still lacking for Windows... Also, AVC now converts audio with VOB files (it didn't used to), so really, just pull the video off with DVDfab and then convert to AVI...5MBs/minute of video...that is 450MBs for a 1.5 hour video...now the quality is only about 8 out of 10...but you can probably make it 10 out of 10 with a little bit larger file size and some playing around with the settings...

UPDATE: I noticed a better overall result with all programs if I first got the DVD files on my HDD (using DVDfab) then using handbrake, AVC, or VLC, converting them into the desired format... Over Handbrake produced the best AVI files so far...still having some issues with handbrake converted videos showing small lines when heavy motion is happening in the video...
