It deals with making a big screen movie projector using a stripped down lcd monitor 15 inch is the most common. Mine is going to be a 17 lcd. This do it yourself project is awesome. It makes a wall movie screen of up to 12 feet with an awesome picture.
So far I've purchased:
plans:20.00 dollars (gives access to the invaluable forums)
dell 1702fp: 243.00
Norpro reflector bowl: 35.00
I still have a long way to go but it will cost in the ballpark of 400.00 to 600.00 USD. The 15inch lcd is the cheapest route. Lens and stuff cost alot less.
I still need . tempered glass , lens-fresnel combo and a light bulb. The light bulb cost 40.00 where the retail version big screen projector bulbs cost 3 to 4 hundred.

If you already have an old lcd then the cost gets less.
It is HDTV quality or near that at a fraction of the cost of a retail version (rivals a $40,000 projector). It is diy so it takes some work and a lot of research i've found.
Go to google and do a search for lumenlab or lumenlab plogs. Maybe Allthumbs plog. It has great pictures.

I can't wait to get it all going and play UT2004 on the big screen . wooot.CS
 
Yet, with a couple wires that I would need for my PC, I can play computer games on my TV, which wouldnt cost a fortune. :confused:
 
Hey Corpfox I've hooked my computer to my tv and the resolution it reduces the picture to is terrible. Especially if your used to the computer graphics.CS

Hey SirThom I looked at the projector and it seems to be of pretty good quality. I hope you don't have to buy a bulb for it. very pricey. near 300.00 for it. They have done quite a study on the diy pj and the retail pj. The lumen output for the diy pj is nearly 7000 lumens plus you can change any part for it without having to pay a service technician to fix it because you alread know which parts aren't working. Very simple setup. Granted the contrast is no where near what the retail is but it has to be at a smaller picture to achieve an awesome picture.
The InFocus X1 is a standard SVGA resolution (800x600) projector that incorporates the latest 0.55" DLP chip from Texas Instruments. It is rated at a maximum of 1000 ANSI lumens of brightness and 2000:1 contrast (my lcd was tested at 800:1),

diy pj is whatever resolution your lcd monitor puts out. Mine is 1280x1024. I could show you some pics if I could attach here. they are awesome.

diy is for somone who likes to tinker. CS
 
The projector comes with everything needed (minus the screen and ceiling mount)....the bulb is supposed to be replaced after (I think) 4,000 hours. We've had ours for at least a year, and we've not hit 800 hours yet. So it really depends on how much you use it.

I have played on the computer with the projector, and it looks pretty sharp if you connect the computer right to the projector (no s-video, etc.)
