choosing the sex of your baby

I think it's rather sad.

It should be a mystery, random chance, God's will. God might have a reason He doesn't want you to have a child of a certain gender.

And to top it off. In Vitrio fertilization is a painful procedure (at least from everything I've read. Having never done it myself... :P ). There is no way I'd want my wife to suffer through that just to be able to decide the sex of my child....

its Gods will and not our place to decide. heck we decided to eat forbidden fruit and look where that got us.

Well, you guys can continue pumping out fleshy headed mutants - personally, when it's my time to choose, I'll be sure to pick up the full suite of genetic enhancements for my kid.

Full spectrum anti-illness, clear up any hereditary conditions, ensure the best possible immune defence and totally clean organ bill of health. Prevent any issues with genetic damage through cell replication. Maximise intelligence and emotional stability.

So while the rest of you are raising mouth breathers, I'll be picking out which five languages Eon Junior will be raised speaking, and deciding where he or she is going to University!

*Note: This post is not intended to insult or criticise existing children. Right now, we all roll the dice in the great genetic crapshoot, with no other option. Soon though, you're going to have to decide whether God really gets to make the call on whether your child gets born with motor neurone disease or a hole in the heart. For their sakes, I hope you choose to be forgiven the sin of deciding for him.*

sounds like a George Orwell novel...

Gattaca specifically. Which said that not EVERYTHING is determined by genes, but certainly didn't claim that modification and improvement didn't give you a headstart.

Orwell wrote a novel called Gattaca, or is it just the movie with Thurman and Hawke?

I personally am not against it. After all, isn't it God's will if I choose to make my baby a genetic superhuman? Or am I acting outside of God's sovereignty and jurisdiction? We're too quick to say "this isn't God's will" when I believe the definition of God's will is any and all things that happen.
Or am I mistaken? If I am, happily so. Because that means human sin is not God's will, and yet it's in God's plan...
Or perhaps we're mistaking "plan" with "will". Either way, I don't believe God will visit me and tell me not to make my children how I see fit. I mean, if that were the case, then we should say: "No artificial insemination if the guy can't do it. Not God's will". Also, "No vasectomy. Or God would have made you that way." And while we're at it, '"N medicine, because God will heal you without."

well techinically i have no proplem enchancing a kids genetics to make him more immune to diseases in stuff but chooseing the sex of the kind should be natural occuerance

Why? There's no disgusting child sacrifice or Molech fire-walking going on here. It's just choosing if you want a daughter or a son. Is that so profane? Unnatural, yes, but hey, God chooses the sex of the kid from Way Up High, doesn't He? Then again, God's not entirely natural.

I think it's just fine. There's nothing evil about it.

i really cant make a good argument i really cant. but i would prefer Gods will be done on earth as it is in Heaven and since Gods knows our kids before their even born i would think that is His will in heaven so might as well let it be on earth

I saw the movie! I saw it at school for this weird class i took freshman year! It was well made, but kinda weird. The funny part was my teacher put his hand over the projector for a part where he wasn't wearing any clothes... and he took his hand off to early and we saw the guys butt... everyone laughed

I'm not sure who wrote the original story of Gattaca - but I was referring to the film version, which I've seen SOME of. ;)

I am not sure about this, Technology is a great thing but we use it to often. We have become depentant on it for to many things. Technology is a great thing and it makes things much eaiser. Haven't you ever just wanted to give all these this technology up and live out in the country, working the land and being one with nature. I am getting a little of subject but I think we use technology all to often and for to many things. I personally would not use it to decided the sex of my child, I would like that to be Gods will. I am also not to sure about using it to make sure the child is free of illness, that might sound of terrible to some, but it would have been Gods will and if my child is to be sick or deficient in some way that would be fine with me because it would be my child, and thats what really matters. Life is the most wonderful gift there is and it should not be messed with.

agreed dead aim. and really if we were to live out off the land and use a candle to light everything wouldt we be useing a type of technology??

This "out with nature" stuff may sound simpler to you, but I have three words for you.

Food. Shelter. Sanitation.

Seriously, just try compromising ONE of those three things in the comfort of your own home over the weekend. Even if it's not flushing the toilet after you use it all weekend. I trust this will soon amend your fascination with the "simple life". ;)

And a sure fire way of spotting someone who's never had a sick/disabled child is spotting the line "it would be God's will and I'd be fine with it" in their argument. Sod that, quite frankly, it can be God's will for some other persons child to get the short straw.

Perhaps. I won't pretend to know if it is, because frankly my perception of God's Will and God's Plan are blurred, and more frankly, I can't be certain of the Plan. I know there's a Will, but not all adhere to it. Is that part of the Plan?
However, I think that suffering is best viewed from the sufferer's p o v, and not from the sidelines. Can be a real problem when you pretend to know what another is going through and you know approximately jack about it. Though I don't think any sane person (with the exception of a monk) would appreciate having a two-headed kid squirm out with one lung growing off of its earlobe...something rather pathetic about it; most sane people, I think, would cry about it bitterly and ask, "Why?" or if not they'll go about it the Brutus way and be silent about it.
