The Christian Gamers Alliance does not allow users under the age of 13 to register an account due to COPPA:
Christian Gamers Alliance staff have decided not to divert funds and resources to pursue COPPA compliance at this time or the foreseeable future, meaning that users under the age of 13 are not permitted to create forums accounts. If a user under 13 misrepresents their age to create an account, his or her account will be deleted immediately to protect the Alliance from legal liability. If the user persists in creating subsequent accounts, the user may be banned by IP address.
Since the Alliance is staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers and supported finally in its entirety by donations from community members, we are not willing to take the legal risks associated with COPPA compliance.
We recommend any visitors ineligible for forums registration and with pressing issues share those issues with a parent, a trusted member of a local church (e.g. youth leader, elder, or pastor), or, if relevant, the appropriate authorities as Scripture advises. Each situation is different and this recommendation is not directed toward a specific individual nor does it constitute formal or legal advice.
It is my sincere hope that this notice does not paint our community as callous or fearful. Our vision remains to glorify God through gaming and that includes encouraging Christians who are enduring difficult times; however, we are not equipped to help those under 13 years of age. There are other organizations, both online and local, that are designed for that purpose.
Source: Children's Online Privacy Protection Act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaThe Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA) is a United States federal law, located at 15 U.S.C. § 6501–6506 (Pub.L. 105-277, 112 Stat. 2581-728, enacted October 21, 1998).
The act, effective April 21, 2000, applies to the online collection of personal information by persons or entities under U.S. jurisdiction from children under 13 years of age. It details what a website operator must include in a privacy policy, when and how to seek verifiable consent from a parent or guardian, and what responsibilities an operator has to protect children's privacy and safety online including restrictions on the marketing to those under 13. While children under 13 can legally give out personal information with their parents' permission, many websites altogether disallow underage children from using their services due to the amount of paperwork involved.
