Curiosity on prayer

Officer SOE/LoE/Where's "here"?
After having read today's Upper Room, 30 September, 2010, available on line, just a quick question out of curiosity. How many pray in public over a meal or snack? More thoughts from me after some answers. And yes my other half and I hold hands and pray for all of our meals and snacks wherever we are.

When eating out my family does pray at a steady pace/volume. We don't stand up, hold hands, and give others dirty looks though, we just thank God is all. :p

We do - don't even think about it - we just do. Don't make it a big deal - just do it.

i do it, even with non-christians, i usually ask if its ok to be respectful and show that i care but never heard a no so far. basically anywhere and everywhere

Generally, I do at home and in public.

I recently found that my old family formula was getting old -- repetition make ritual for me, and I try to avoid that -- so I've started filling in the blanks.

That formula was "Lord Jesus, thank you for this food, and bless the hands that prepared it."

Nowadays, say I'm at Extreme Pita. I might pray "Lord Jesus, thank you for this pita, and bless the folks at Extreme Pita for making it for me." I've wondered what kind of reaction an overhearer might have to that...

I didn't grow up doing it... so it's something I'm having to re-train myself to do. I forget as often as I remember to do it, but I try to remember to take a moment and say a prayer, even if it is half-way through the meal.

The response is about what I thought for CGA members. Which is encouraging. btw my wife and I hold hands for about 85% of all our prayers because it shows we are one. We don't make a big fuss either we just do it. What has happened more often than not is someone will come up to us later and say what a blessing it was to see someone pray in public. Which also shows that even our lives are always being watched when we don't know it.

We actually aren't big meal-prayers in general, so when praying over a meal it is usually initiated by someone else. That being said, we never make a show over it nor do we hide it. And my wife and I always hold hands while we pray at any time, but not with others, for the same reason Ursen listed. Either that or she's burrowed beneath my arm, face burried.(sp?)

We always pray over a meal. Even when I'm at work I take the time to pray. Out in public, in private, it doesn't matter. Sometimes I forget when I eat a snack in the afternoon, however for the most part I pray over anything I'm going to eat.

We also pray before going anywhere in a car. ;)

The Hebrew tradition is to pray after the meal in thanksgiving to God for the bounty he provided. Somehow as Christians we started doing it before the meal, but I'm not sure when this started or what the logic was behind it.

probably a matter of semantics... at some point someone probably figured it would be a good idea to thank the Host and Provider for the meal before eating.

I know when people drop off food at my workplace, we thank them immediately, and partake later.

Hrmm, i always thought we did it so that we don't get sick from eating it? With that being said, i don't really pray over any of my meal. Which is strange. because i was always raised praying over my meals. Maybe i need to see a psychologist.
