D&D?

Well, the reason im posting this is that a couple friends o' mine have recently started playing D&D, and are trying to get me to join. Various opinions are that its just a CMG, other's say it's a demonic RPG. Any thoughts?

to me.... its lame compared to WoW, but i think its all how u look at it. i think D&D may have more history in darker magic than most games though, but as far as Christianity goes towards it, its up to ur convictions

It really depends on your maturity as a believer. If you can handle some of the darker elements of the game and not have them impact your walk in any way, go for it. If you have any doubt, then maybe the Holy Spirit is saying you need to think twice about it.

I played D&D for years. I do not play anymore. I would say that if you start playing the board game, it wouldn't take long for you to play the RPG. The game itself is not "bad", but it's history and background are based on witchcraft, sorcerry, and satanism. I do not play D&D Online, because I do not want to get back into the D&D mentality and tempt myself to pull out the RPG again. If it were me, I wouldn't play the board game.

All things are permissible, but not all things are beneficial. Is this something that would be beneficial somehow? Maybe yes, maybe no. The same can be said for many things.

The important thing for you is to study the Bible, listen to your conscience, and make the most honest choice you can. Listen to the counsel of those you trust, but don't let them define your convictions.

If it wasn't for Dungeons and Dragons, you wouldn't have World of Warcraft. Personally I play it, and as long as you realize that its not real, and you don't take it to far, I don't think there are going to be any problems.

Care to explain this statement?

I can understand saying the game contains fictional use of sorcery & witchcraft, but I don't think that's what you mean. How does the history and background of the game have anything to do with witchcraft, sorcery and satanism?

EDIT: oops, just wanted to add that I played D&D off and on for many years, but haven't for a long time. I do, however, still enjoy CRPGs. And look at me, I turned out fine :)

The same could be said for any game like that then;

Magic the Gathering
Fable
Guild Wars
Any Elder Scrolls game
Star Wars
Lord of the Rings

The list goes on and on.

That's actually why I don't play Magic the Gathering, as for the others-I've never looked into or played. Although I would disagree with Lord of the Rings, Tolkien's work has a very Christian foundation based on Angels & Demons.

To answer Dark Virtue-Sorcerry, witchcraft, etc have ways in which they have been tradition practiced-ie based in history. While D&D is just a game, and it is just a game. A lot of it's ideas are based on the prinicpals & ideas of what has traditionally been practiced in occultic activities.

I choose not to play anymore because I do not believe it is benificial for me as a Christian to play, but those are my choices. If asked, I will recommend Christians not to play. Those are just my opinions, and I am very willing to express them as only my opinions. What other people do is between them & God.

Gandalf used magic. Sauramon used magic. Sauron uses magic. Its still magic no matter how you look at it. Even if it does have a Christian foundation. (which it does.)

I wasn't discussing the use of magic, I was discussing the foundation in the occult. Tolkien only used the word magic because he could not find a better word in the English language to represent what he meant. Gandalf = angelic; sauramon = fallen angel; sauron = satan

can we agree to disagree on this issue phantom?

Sure.

Good idea, it's a very touchy subject that few agree upon.

I see it this way:

It's a book. Fantasy. Just like video games. Not real. So I don't see anything wrong with it.

Although I do like the comparison of Gandalf-angelic, Saruman-fallen angel, Sauron-Satan

Although Satan IS a fallen angel, right?
