Thrive Once More

Waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert.

-Isaiah 35:6 (NRSV)

LAST summer we suffered a terrible drought all over the southern region of the United States. Our lovely creek that had been a full, rushing, white-water stream became almost dry. Once it had been a pleasure to walk along its banks, but because of the dry weather it became stagnant, sluggish, and mosquito-ridden. By mid-summer it seemed that the creek might become completely dry, causing hardship for the animals as well as the people who live close by the stream.

A month later the rains returned, just in time to save the creek from becoming a disaster area. We were overjoyed when the creek became a rushing waterway again. The wildlife returned, and we could watch the blue herons, fish, and beaver thrive once more.

Drought and joy at relief from it are also seen in the Bible. Isaiah chapter 35 brings to disheartened people the good news that in the midst of wilderness and dry land God is coming to save them. As for the Israelites in exile, Advent with its promise of God's coming brings joy to a dry, thirsty land. This is news that our world needs this year.

Prayer:
Fountain of life, help us to daily find joy in this Advent season and to spread this joy to others. Amen.
