Disappearing emails

My parents' Earthlink email account has this problem, whereby occasionally the inbox will have a few dozen emails in it - that suddenly and inexplicably vanish completely.

Anyone know why this would happen?

earthlink is having issues. once those mails are gone they are poofied.
