Ethanol fueling station map

I know we have other environmentalists on these forums, so I figured some people might be interested in this:

It's a catalog of fuel stations that sell ethanol fuel.

What is the average price for a gallon of E85?

Here in Sweden we have fuel prices.....erm....higher that the ones in the US for sure. Yesterday, 1 litre (about 1/4 gallon) cost 11:50 Swedish Krona which is about 1.5 US Dollars = 1 Gallon of petrol/gas (unleaded 95 octan) costs approx 6 US Dollars.

I work for a haulage contractor and we recently bought the SAAB 9-5 with its BioPower (E85) engine. They are better for the enviroment yes, and SAAB has the advantage over the Volvo V70 (if you are comparing the enviromental friendly models from each manufacturer).

Hmm....went to look if Volvo offered a vehicle for the US market similar to the BioPower version from SAAB, but I couldnt find any.

being from Iowa e85 stations aren't hard to find here, you can't go hardly 50 miles without seeing a ethanol refinery

... but we reduce our dependency on foreign oil. That's the big idea.

I was talking about E85 with guys at work the other day and they said the main issue is extracting the ethanol. The best way (I think...) is through sugar, but the tremendous tarriffs on sugar prevent us from importing any from Mexico or other Latin American countries to be used in this way.

Since there's no stations in my area, I can't say for sure, but I have read that it is slightly less expensive than gasoline-- maybe $0.25 cheaper. However, the price is more stable than gasoline because it is a renewable energy source.

This chart shows the price in Nebraska, which I'm going to assume it's shows a similar pattern elsewhere.

Notice how it's constantly rising... why would that be? Technology is getting better, demand is increasing... sounds to me like the E85 people are becoming just like the oil industry - greedy pigs.

e85 is good..however it has less energy per glalon than gaoline therefore it takes more fuel to generate the same power. Also 385(this many hve changed) costs more to produce than what it returns.

biodiesel on the other hand costs little to produce and has more energy per gallon than gasoline.

I don't think octane and fuel efficiency are the same thing (in fact I'm pretty sure they're not) but E85 is 105 octane, which is quite high-performance compared to standard 87 octane gasoline. I'm assuming that you'll get more horsepower out of a properly converted E85 engine than you would out of a normal gasoline engine of comparable displacement.

Swedish tuning specialists, Nordic Uhr, offer a stage 3 tuning package for the Saab 9-5 2.0t Biopower E85: 295 hp & 440Nm (E85 engine but you need unleaded 98 to get the most out of the engine). They also have a engine tuning kit that give you approx. 600 hp :)
