EverQuest II goes free-to-play (again), now on Steam

So now that EverQuest II is free-to-play AND on Steam, is anyone planning on trying it out? Do we have any long-time EQ2 players willing to help show some noobs the ropes?

I know F2P MMOs tend to be popular for 1-2 weeks then drop off the face of the earth. I'm not looking for a long-term MMO, but I figure I might as well ride the wave of popularity instead of waiting to see if the game stays popular and installing it just as everyone else is moving on (again).

horrible timing, I would love to give people a tour of my favorite MMO setting, but SWTOR drops in 6 days and that is gonna be it for my game time for a couple months. I would be glad to answer any questions about it.

horrible timing

true dat...

EQII had so much potential, and IMO was one of the best MMOs to date...but the lack to people playing it, makes for lack of game updates... Which is why it is now F2P...and like all other F2P games...they disappear... :(

/wonders when the F2P market will hit over saturation and crash...
Any day now.

(This link seemed somewhat relevant.)

But after the "oversaturation" and "crash" stages comes equilibrium. I'm looking forward to seeing what that looks like for the F2P market.

D'oh, that is terrible timing.

Well, if no other ToJ members and/or CGA community regulars are going to play it, I'm going to skip it, too. I only play F2P titles for the social aspect (which is why I ended up uninstalling Rusty Hearts; I enjoyed playing the game, but no one else on the CGA forums seemed interested in trying it out).

...Yes?

I wonder when WoW announces their inevitable "WoW is now F2P 1-80" ...maybe shortly after SWTOR lands? Will SWTOR follow suit?

Doubtful.

WoW's next expansion launches next year. I anticipate many (though nowhere near a majority) people leaving WoW for SWTOR until Mists of Pandaria hits, then returning to WoW until they either get bored or finish most of the new content in MoP, then maybe returning to SWTOR when its first expansion drops. And so on and so forth.

SWTOR has two powerhouse names behind it (Star Wars and BioWare) and opinions of the beta were mostly positive. I think BioWare has a new cash cow.

Moo.

Yeah especially with the new annual pass (get D3free deal), it seems they are married to the subscription model.

Eskimo and I play, though currently on separate servers that will be merged together in about a week. The new expansion is a whole lot of awesome in my opinion (though granted it only caters to some very specific gaming interests which for once happen to be mine), and I expect to be getting a lot of playtime in later this month.

Although I'm not very good with grouping, I have a guild hall and a lot of assets from many years of playing on the Bazaar server to help anyone get started and can probably answer a lot of questions. Mostly my specialty is crafting and soon-to-be dungeon-making. I'm still a subscribing member though, so my experience isn't going to all be applicable to the free side of things, but Eskimo's been on the free server (Freeport) for a while so he knows a lot more about that aspect than me.

Tek,

I play EQ2 so if you ever want to hit me up, feel free. I may not be as advanced in the game as some people, but I can still help get you started at least.

See I think kinda the opposite may happen...Blizzard just got a TON of people to commit to the 12 month subscription fee, then watch SWTOR come out and put a dent in subscription profits, then Blizzard drops the bomb that it goes F2P....then Blizzard regains players under a F2P model, many more are stuck in the annual pass whether they play or not. F2P players pay $50-60 for Diablo 3, while the annual pass people just paid $15 x 12 months for their "free" D3 copy that does not become theirs to keep until they have fully paid off the annual pass.

Just a hunch. Blizzard marketing peeps are sly.

Also, Mists of Pandaria seems to be the least popular of the expansions. Many people may return for it, but many have also professed their intention to leave when it drops. Quitea few have already quit...they see it as a choice between pandas & sith inquisitors.

I think it will be considered one of the most underrated expacs in the future. And I'm pretty sure it will get boring playing as a sith inquisitor when the vast majority of the people will be playing one (like, for instance, me).

I agree it will be underrated. My daughter and I are very much looking forward to it, and we have only seen the tip of the iceberg. Still, people heard the word "pandas" and have already jumped. I will admit, I thought the Xpack announcement was a joke also.

It does seem that 33% of the beta population were inquisitors. Had my heart set on one, but I like the feel of the agent instead.

back on topic: I am Sklurb or Snurg or something in EQ2. Swashbuckler I think i was. Do we have a guild in EQ2?

I am installing EQ2 to give it a try. I've never played an MMORPG before.

If you roll on Freeport* and let me know your character name, I mail you some stuff! :D

Feel free to ask any questions you might have. I've been playing for many years. I'm not the most uber player out there, but I've accumulated some knowledge about things.

(* A server merge happened since I last posted so Freeport is now where I'm at too, instead of Bazaar)
