Favorite RPGs for PSX and PS2?

Unless I missed something, developers have yet to produce a breakout RPG for the seventh generation of consoles (Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii)--with the possible exception of Mass Effect. (I wouldn't know; I don't have a 360 and I haven't played it yet.) Rather than speculate about possible titles and their prospective quality, I figured I'd take it back a generation or two.

I own both a Playstation and a Playstation 2. I bought both of them to play RPGs. I've already played some great titles on both systems, but there are very few that I would consider masterpieces (like Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI).

What are your favorite RPGs for the PSX and PS2?

And you can tell me that you liked FFVII and FFX, but that won't convince me to try playing them again. Blech. Square lost the magic after Chrono Trigger.

I Kinda like FF VIII. Interesting system there. Also Drakengard 2, which is bit more hack-and-slash, but has interesting plot twists...But honestly...there aren't really any good RPGs being put out or that have been put out lately.

Xenogears..

the game rlly feels like its layed out for you, almsot like one big training level, but the fights are so freakin awesome. although it shares a common name with Xenosaga, the only similarities between the 2 are the fighting style and the somewhat long talking bits.

also i loved ff8. it was somewhat revolutionary at the time, it was the first ff to give summons life. ff7/ff9 they were just used as damage. ff8 gave them life, and w/o them, all u could do is the attack command (couldnt even use items). it also had a different developement style which allowed u to strengthen ur characters in others ways then lvling up. never played ff6 or lower so idk about those if they eevn had summons.

Drakengard was a good game, i had fun with it for a few days, but never tried for the alternate endings/storyline. Draken was also a good game, dungeon crawler style with the addition of a dragon in open areas.

There is no good new RPGs, for some reason RPGs have dropped off the deep end...that just suck now...old school RPGs are the only way to go...

If you are going to compare Snes games you just aren't going to get the same charm and innocence. Technically I quit playing RPGs sometime in the middle of the PS 2's life span in an effort to do something more useful and because I was tired of all the Taoist tones. Having never played Sega games I do tend to wonder about some of the "collections" of it's more popular RPGs for the PS like the...

The Arc the lad Collection
Sega Ages Phantasy Star Complete Collection (for Playstation 2 but it's not out in the US yet)

I can say Sony's attempt at a rpg "Legend of Dragoon" back when was rather dry and the most recent RPG I've played "Rogue Galaxy" had a very re-treaded plot in spite of its attempt to infuse a star wars like setting.

I've said it before but I'd recommend Saga Frontier 2 as a largely overlooked good one (because the first one was lousy but they are completely unrelated plot wise). Be aware It's a very linear game that jumps back and forth between 2 different characters over 3 generations (it's actually fairly short for a rpg though). Also in spite of it's marketing as being able to change outcomes there are only a few parts you actually can. Still I found the found the plotline refreshing and characters well done. Not to mention it's all watercolor which give the graphics a bit different flare. I actually cared about seeing the ending by the time I got there and not once did I roll my eyes though the game :).

Final Fantasy Tactics was good as well but I did not like the ending. FF 12 was supposed to be patterned after it's world.

As to Xenogears I already stated my opinion in Tek's previous thread http://www.cgalliance.org/forums/showthread.php?t=23632&highlight=xenogears .

The Breath of Fire series has lost it's appeal to me too.

I may have asked this before Tek but have you played any of the "Dragon Warrior" series? Ahem excuse me "Dragon Quest" I had a 8-bit flashback :D. The same guy that did the character designs for Chrono Trigger does Dragon Quest (and Dragon Ball go figure). I never got into the series just thought I'd mention it as it's a popular series on the Playstation now.

FFXII was the biggest disappointment for me...I do not like the open world do what you want thing... I prefer the old FF linear you must do this way...

I've played the first hour of Dragon Quest VIII and enjoyed it. It has the feel of an old-school JRPG with terrific graphics and interesting characters.

I'm currently working through another RPG at the moment, but I plan to play Ocarina of Time ($10 on Wii Virtual Console), then Dragon Quest VIII.

I liked Parasite Eve. I would of liked it if I also played Parasite Eve 2.

I'm currently addicted to Marvel Ultimate Alliance. I only wished people did play on-line, bots can be so dumb...

Dragonquest VIII is fun, although it gets hard and confusing at times. Btw, Axes are the way to go with Yangus. Conqueror's Axe!
