So I'm on the forums this morning, and we're debating what's better for a pally tank to fill their red gem meta requirement with:

Nightmare Tear or Shifting Dreadstone?

Nightmare Tear:
+10 All Stats

Shifting Dreadstone
+10 Agility
+15 Stamina

At first glance, it seems that the only meaningful difference between the two gems is that Nightmare Tear gives +10 Strength more, and the Shifting Dreadstone gives +5 Stamina more. I'd take 5 stamina over 10 strength any day.

I've never played a tank, but there really isn't any need at all to stack str on a tank is there? I would also go with the 5 sta extra.

Str doesn't give you any type of help towards damage control or evasion. You don't need to worry about dps as a tank, so I think it would be logical to go for the extra health.

That's what I was thinking. I thought maybe I had missed something since all the guides tell you to take the Nightmare Tear. I've also had a few players tell me in-game to take the Tear.

Strength is at best a threat increase, but I'm not having any trouble keeping threat in ICC, so I've little use for it.

str actually feeds into your parry rating along with increasing your tps. remember with the tear you're increasing everything by 10. stats that are relative to tanking are str (parry and ap for threat) agility (+armor +crit) and stam. If you want a point for point calculation, they have a prot pally thread on elitistjerks.com that has those numbers :)

Strength for pally works three ways that I know of:

  • White damage/threat increase through boosting attack power
  • Yellow damage/threat increase through boosting spell power as long as you took the talent that turns strength into spell power (used to convert stamina into spell power before it was nerfed) and don't forget to multiply this by our righteous fury threat increase for holy damage
  • Block value increase (not block rating)
I thought strength only gives DKs parry through a talent.

I would say strength if you are going for a block value set, Agility if it is for a mitigation set which I think your current gear is more of a mitigation set.

Yeah, I'm not into Block Value as it stands right now. I like how mitigation has been working for me.
