"Fear the Lord" does not mean that we should be shaking in terror. It's meant to say that we should revere, or deeply respect Him. Our God is loving and kind. But He knows that at times we need a sharp reprimand to keep us on the right path. I would hope that your earthly parents were much the same.
I have done many wrongs in my life, and God has reprimanded me for them. If I am not taught, how can I learn? If I do not learn, how can I grow? Reprimanded - yes, but also forgiven. Jesus has paid the price so that I can learn without eternal punishment for the times that I need educated in the ways of our Holy God.
You say you are a Christian, but that you have not yet read the Bible. Start today. How can you fully know God's promises just from hear-say? You can't. Start reading, get in a church, a study group, something - but you can't learn it all on your own.
Also keep in mind that "loving God" because you "fear Hell" isn't really love. It's obedience to avoid punishment. They're not the same thing, and it isn't truly love. You're headed the right direction, but it sounds like you still have some decisions to make. Every time you sin, realize that the penalty for sin is death and eternal separation, but that the debt has been paid. Every sin can be taken away (from the eternal scorecard, so to speak) Try to keep in mind that God wrote the rule about living a sinless life, but he loves you so much that he re-wrote the rule, just for you.
