Highlander sets up personal vent server

You need to be careful running vent. There are some rather large restrictions involved, such as the fact that it cannot be behind a firewall and you can only have a max of 8 users before you have to start paying licensing fees.

Because you can't keep it in the firewall's DMZ that leaves your entire computer open for attack.

Secondly, you need to ensure that your ISP will allow you to run servers off your internet connection. My ISP (Cox Cable) has explicit terms in their contract that I will not run a server on my system. The potential punishment for doing so is no longer being able to get a network connection from Cox.

Newest version of ventrilo running

IP: 192.168.24.4
Port: 3784

I just wanted to point out that the IP address that you listed is an internal IP that only systems on your home network will be able to connect to. For that to work for others, you would need to list the IP provided by your ISP. Also, have your router forward port 3784 to your internal IP or put it in the DMZ.

even though I could care less about "legalities" if you guys are really interested in getting a vent server "legally", we can rent one from nuclearfallout that's based in seattle for only $5 a month and will hold 20 clients on it.

But I guess for now I won't run the server unless someone on TS asks me to.

updated info: IP: 216.160.93.97, ports forwarded

As Christians we should always care about the legalities of our actions. You are setting a poor witness and sending a very poor message about your integrity with your statement. This goes along with downloading music you don't own a copy of or burning copies of games you have never bought. Both are illegal and wrong.

As far as renting, if you can get our members to actually contribute funds, all the more power to you. With the exceptional few, our members have shown over the past 6 years they are more interested in playing games then helping out with costs. 300+ members in ToJ now. If everyone gave 1 dollar a month or a yearly donation of $10-20 dollars. We would have more then enough to run our own dedicated server and cover licensing costs. We have staffers willing to run the servers, but are not capable of covering the cost for everyone else by themselves.

what's the cost for additional clients?

i don't know so i'm asking...why does vent not want be behind a firewallL?

The current vent server will hold 20 clients, increasing the number to 40 will make the server cost around $15 a month.

This is a rented server and therefore the issues with firewalls/number clients is negated, making this vent server "legal"

Atown has informed me that contributing this server may be perceived as "aggressive" and "power hungry" to some in the community. But it's not, I simply wish to be able to be able to unmute Halonic and give back to those guildies that helped power quest me.

I have both ts and vent set up on my network server, Its just a matter of me setting up the dmz. The computer is running linux, which i did all the configs for, so i know its secure.

I think ts with something other then 4kb/sec of audio bandwith would be alot better. Ive noticed that having a good mic is the best attribute. I spent about 20 dollars on a headset and that made me understandable :P

Also the liscensing for ts is very inexpensive, as we are a non-profite organization/clan we qualify for no cost

It's not so much that, as it makes the ToJ leadership wonder why you're willing to spend a monthly fee on that, rather than donating towards a ToJ game server. Especially when considering the fact that we currently run TS.

When members do things like this it can be very frustrating to the leadership, especially as they are actively trying to get a game server back up, and are just lacking the monthly donations to do so.
