How to be a retarded mage

Hey that's me! I'm playing around with leveling a mage, but I'm terrible.

Any seasoned mage players out there know the best leveling spec / rotation? I keep dieing like a noob. (where's the plate armor?)

of course you wanna go with frost, hands down the most mana efficient spec for questing, but horrible for late game dps. being on a pvp server, you'll also want frost for the ganks, my frost mage at lvl 66 can handle equal level death knights as long as i pop most of my cooldowns.

there is no rotation for frost dps, you just simply spam frostbolt over and over again until you have ice lance, then you can do shatter combos on regular mobs. before that, you can do shatter combos with fire blast, but it's very inefficient for questing; only do it for dungeons to boost your dps meters.

you can take a look at vexias' spec to get an idea of a leveling talent pointer, but really it depends on your play style. I don't follow anyone's talent guides for leveling because i want to have my own play style (so yes i use both frostbite and imp blizzard, it's not a misplacement, and i do aoe grinding in WPL and EPL just fine).

I can show you some aoe grinding spots if you'd like.

yes, frost is the way to go for leveling...zero doubt about it. nothing says "ding" like pulling 10+ mobs at a time and aoeing them down. little downtime for drinking w/ your pet throwing mana at you all the time.

as mentioned above...no rotation, just pretty much a spammy spec.

at 80...fire, although 3.2.2 might see a resurgence of arcane with some of the upcoming changes (yay!!).

thanks for the pro tips. haven't got the aoe pull down yet, but fun stuff.

0.) frost armor
1.) ice lance, tab, ice lance, tab, ice lance, repeat some more
2.) frost nova
3.) blink
4.) blizzard
5.) rinse and repeat until level 80

if you need an extra cc, your pet can do a ranged fn as well but you shouldn't need it too much.

aoe spots:

20ish: redridge mountains; small groups of gnolls and orcs, at this level you don't have ice barrier, so it's a little hard to pull with just mana shield.

30ish: duskwood; the worgens are packed pretty close together, but still don't have ice barrier.

40ish: there is an island off of the northeastern coast of theramore isle with lots of murlocs and absolutely no horde because it's so remoted, no one ever goes there, and now you have ice barrier and shatter barrier for the aoe pull.

50ish: WPL, the big graveyard near the WPL flightpath with all the zombies and skeletons, much easier at this point with your spell dmg gear and more talents.

outland: temple of telhamat: in front of the temple there are lots of birds, they are very close to each other and fairly easy to pull.

haven't got to northrend yet but i remember seeing someone wrote down some spots, i just don't remember the names.

basically once you have ice barrier and shattered barrier, put it up, mount, and run around the mobs to get aggro on lots of them, but try not to get hit too many times. once you round up all of them, try run around in circle a bit to group them together, then get hit on purpose to shatter your ice barrier. blink after they are all frozen in place, then blizzard them down. depending on their remaining health, you can either cast a 2nd blizzard right in front of you or just use arcane explosion. when i got to western plaguelands i had 110 ish spell damage, it was enough for me to just use 1 blizzard to kill half of them then AE the rest of them down when they got close, 2nd blizzard became an overkill.

before you have the ice barrier combo, you have to use mana shield and frost nova; but remember, even after you have ice barrier, you can still use mana shield and frost nova to pull the extra mobs and nova in case of emergency (resist or missed the aoe of shatter barrier); even pull out an water elemental for the extra frost nova.
