I know what you mean, I feel your pain, I was there too, Im sure everyone has been there too.

Maybe when u have money or a job, you could buy whatever video card you wanted. Or if someone donated you money/video card, then you'd be happy like me.

Off-Topic: I have no idea what you said said there, AmusedToe. 2nd, mackeral and flounder, are those fish/salmon?

On-Topic: I can see laggy people, I normally never do, when I see my own head. Yet, it makes me laugh when i have a 140 ping(highest of all, err peoples pings)and can still kill players, very odd.

The ATI Radeon 9550 is still extremely impressive. Compared to my Nvidia TNT2.

Im curious about something:

I remember my old Nvidia TNT2 video card had 2 compatible video devices: Open GL and Direct 3D. Open GL was sharper, but Direct 3D was smoother. I had to pick Open GL cause I didnt lag as much as in Direct 3D.

I know my new ATI Radeon 9550 video card has those options, but since I'm new with these video cards, will either video devices be different than the other?

I have 3 video devices: Open GL, Direct 3D and Direct X

So far, Doom 3 and Counter-Strike is running Open GL, Halo had to use Direct X because it was dumb on detecting my video card.

Using the ATI Radeon 9550 256 MB video card, can anyone tell me, if either of those 3 video devices, Open GL, Direct 3D and Direct X will change the affect/effect on any of the games that are out now?

PS: I dont want to change the default video devices, I'm afraid it may damage my new video card!

Half-life 1 engine was designed for OpenGL, while HL2 is fixed in Direct3D.

Choose OpenGL for best performance and quality on CS 1.6.

Direct 3D and Direct X are related, they aren't different modes. Direct 3D utilizes the Direct X driver to view certain graphics. OpenGL is the way to go on HL1 and CS 1.6 graphics.

How did you manage to run D3 on high without the framerate sucking? I had to run on at least medium on my 9600 pro/256 for me not to have a mental breakdown.

Not that I care about Doom3, I hated it. But there are other games coming out that use the engine and I'm afraid of the performance on D3 being indicative of how it will run in the future.

hmm..

Direct 3D has more eye candy then openGL thats for sure. Direct 3D isn't bad, its just HL 1 and CS 1.6 was designed for opengl, thats why it is teh sux0r on Direct 3D.

Would the, Clock Speed make a difference?
Mine is 800MHZ, highest to all video cards, even higher than ATI Radeon X 800.

Mental Breakdown? Framerate sucking? Pauses in-game?

In Doom 3, everything is excellent, except for their hands, it looks like an old man hands(wrinkled), unless thats how its suppose to be.

And I just played Half-Life 2 demo twice. Its very enjoyable and heart-pounding, especially with those blood sucking head-crabs and speeder head-crabs(the ones that scream when they charge at you), freaky.
Their physic are awesome, throwing a can in the trash to picking up saws and slicing zombie head-crabs.

Half-Life 2 is on medium settings*. (* = recommend on my system)

Halo demo was cool too, medium settings too, tough/brutal aliens, errr.
