I own Skyrim. Is it worth $5 to buy Oblivion?

I received Skyrim as a gift in November and it's awesome.

But then I noticed that Oblivion is on sale for $5 on Steam (again) today.

I have an older laptop that doesn't handle Skyrim very well.

So is it worth picking up Oblivion for $5?

Or is it going to be like playing Ocarina of Time after already having played Twilight Princess (i.e. FRUSTRATING)?

(IIRC, there's a mod out there to make Oblivion super-shiny. Or maybe I'm thinking of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., I don't remember.)

EDIT: Judging by the screenshots and my brief time playing Skyrim, the world of Oblivion does seem to have a bit more color in it.

nooooooo, if anything let's pretend oblivion never existed. pick up morrowwind if you have a chance. (elder scrolls 3)

Yah I'll agree with Lloren. The game was ok at best. It's a bummer skyrim doesn't run well enough on your computer :/

Pass for sure. Oblivion was booooring. Morrowind with HD mods is amazing but nothing can come close to the game of the century that is Skyrim.

I bought Oblivion when it was 6 dollars back when but I'm still not playing it until I release a new TF2 map (as per what I said in the chapter reports). However I too bought it with the intent of moding it's graphics and have been doing a lot of mod research in preparation. There are hundreds of mods to make it very, very shiny. Unfortunately unlike Stalker which had a complete and easy one mod collection Oblivion doesn't have a complete graphics mod I could find yet. As such you've got to quite a bit of work to assemble a graphic improvements only collection of Oblivion mods. (side note I made a mod back when, which works with the Stalker complete graphics mod, to remove the cussing in Stalker available here).

Once I do mod Oblivion I intend to release an easy, better graphics only, list of what works together, as they can conflict, but I'm not anywhere near ready to play it yet. If you do want to begin your own hunt for mods this is a good place to start.

Oh Tek you'll probably want the 6 dollar game of the year "deluxe" version of Oblivion if you do buy it. The Oblivion 5 dollar version and some other games that Steam sales have listed up front are not always the version with the most DLC. It's on sale with the 5 dollar version just check the page.

As far as comparing Skyrim and mod-less Oblivion from what I have read I expect...
1. Along with expected graphic and other improvements the leveling and magic combat systems in Skyrim are far improved. Actually I get the sense that magic combat improvements in Skyrim leave weapon combat improvements missed.
2. Oblivion currently has far more content as you get all the DLC, and hundreds or game play mods, while Skyrim still has not released official DLC yet.

Also a warning if you do go looking for mods the Oblivion mod community seems to be well, full of perverts XD. As such you won't (or at least I couldn't) find a mod to improve character models which was not adult or at least packaged with an adult version.

From what I have seen Skyrim is much improved but it is worth noting you can mod Oblivion's gameplay as well as graphics and it's not 60 bucks.

Am I the only person on Earth that likes Oblivion?

I spent hours in Oblivion and the I never thought it was a bad game.

I say its worth $5 (especially since you have a job...).

I thought it looked ok, just ok neither stellar or horrible, or a I would not have bought it. Supposedly Oblivion got dumbed down gameplay elements compared to Morrowwind and gameplay/graphics wise it got upgraded in Skyrim. Of course I haven't played Morrowwind, Skyrim or Oblivion but I do quite a bit of looking before buying and my game sense is generally quite accurate. Really though there are so many mods for Oblivion you can change it however you like, different leveling system, need to eat/sleep, better economy, darker areas needing light etc. Actually I will probably enjoy modding it more than playing it but that's just me.

I think it was a great game and that people put it down as a far worse game than it is. I do believe it is the weakest one of the series, but that's like being the worst Pixar movie -it is still far and away better than most.

I liked Oblivion and still play it sometimes. (probably because I modded it until it was 6% original content) But hey, if you;re like me and you like to break games it's definitely worth $5.

I hated Oblivion with a passion. I honestly thought/think/know it was all kinds of terrible. I don't like Bethesda games. :|

/true story
