Idea: CGA Game Play-through Club

I'm listening to the soundtracks from one of my favorite RPGs of all time and it made me want to fire up the game and play through it again. (I'm going to muster my self-control and wait until I at least finish Okami and Zelda: Ocarina of Time before going back to it, but the pull is difficult to resist.)

That got me thinking of other games I'd like to replay and then what I think is a pretty cool idea struck me: A Game Play-through Club.

Think of it like a book club for gamers: Club members decide on a game, everyone purchases or borrows the game, and everyone plays through the game at roughly the same time. Players could post to a dedicated thread on the game with their impressions and thoughts. Discussion would focus mostly on story and characters, with some discussion of game design.

The format is best suited to role-playing and adventure games, like Chrono Trigger and Hotel Dusk.

Ideally, the club would foster more in-depth discussion of games and help point those interested in exploring video games as an art form to important titles. Think of it like a distance learning college literature class, but for video games.

Club members could post links to reference materials (reviews, synopses, essays, etc.) relevant to the game prior to the club starting the play-through.

The club idea would probably work in a public setting, but keeping it confined to a group of Christian gamers means we can explore and post opinions considered controversial for public forums but relevant to Christians. For example, club members could analyze Crono as a Christ-like figure in Chrono Trigger.

What do you all think?

Hmm, I'm not in a financial situation to do this, but I should refer this to a friend of mine, Eric (not Guilo,) who is a member of a group of game critics who believe that video games should be critiqued in the same fashion as literature, being a form of literature in and of themselves.

I like the idea, I will join once people start sending me donations ;)

I'm down for it, but seriously...Hotel Dusk was the best adventure game example you could come up with? ;)

Now don't go knocking Hotel Dusk. That game was awesome.

If there's sufficient interest to get this off the ground, one of the first posts in the Game Club forum could be asking each interested person to post a complete list of the games they own and/or can borrow. Maybe we could stick to games we all already own for the first few play-throughs.

These game critics don't happen to get paid for what they do, do they?

And if they do get paid, are they looking for someone to add to their staff? :D

These are game "critics," not "game critics." Although Eric is also a "game critic," but he's freelance as of yet.

I didn't say it was a bad game, but with the whole Space Quest, Police Quest, Kings Quest, Monkey Island, etc... series to contend with...well you get my point...

Personally I think the new Sam and Max games would be great to playthrough, I own both seasons, and have finished the first one.

Ah, okay. Hotel Dusk is still one of my favorite adventure games, but I can agree that all the series you listed were awesome (well, at least the ones I played).
