If you don't have an account on Gamespot, then feel free to post here. I've started a steam group called BA-GD (Born again Game Design), which intends to focus on making games for a Christian audience. We use RPG Maker VX Ace, and we decided to make a Mario rpg fan game to learn how the program works to a bit. I wanted to bring back my favorite locations from previous games, but one friend of mine says that would not be lore friendly, as the various games come in different continuities, and the game would get less praise if it was lore breaking. If this is true, I really want to mix continuities, but I would prefer your input (as well as others) on this topic before I make any decisions.

On a second note, if you are interested in this group, contact me on this site, or through steam http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198018345628/ or through Deviantart http://puxido.deviantart.com/, which, all of these, I check regularly. I would welcome more hands to help. We meet on tuesdays and thrusdays to discuss projects.

First, let me say that I applaud your efforts! I haven't programmed in years, but I remember enough to know that it takes dedication to complete any project.

Second, and you can take this with a grain of salt, I encourage you to consider using original characters rather than existing IPs (intellectual properties). Nintendo doesn't have a reputation for lenience with their IPs (though they may not be as strict as Square-Enix or other companies). Furthermore, creating original characters gives you greater freedom and stretches your creative muscle more. You can borrow and even borrow heavily from popular franchises, just like Mighty No. 9 borrowed heavily (VERY heavily) from Mega Man (though the key figure behind Mighty No. 9 helped create Mega Man, so that may not be the best example; still, the value of original but familiar characters holds).

But then again, if you're only looking to build the game to learn the engine, then use what works for you and your team!

I wish you the best in your endeavor. Having written only one game myself years and years ago (and that game, for all my talk of original ideas, being a clone of Columns), I still remember the satisfaction of completing the project.

Please stop by now and then and share updates on your work!
