INI tweaks: performance v. shininess

I didn't want to de-rail the Consolidated Info thread, but I did want to comment on the INI tweaks kraniac posted.
I realized after having to look for this information for more than a few minutes that it should go here...

UT3 INI Tweaks thread on MyUnreal: This is a collection of INI tweaks to fix common annoyances and improve graphics performance over at MyUnreal, where the LOB forums are. It's collected from snippets of an extremely long thread over at the official UT3 forums.

Defiance UT3 FPS INI: This is a site where you can download a verified, safe INI that includes the most common graphical tweaks to improve framerates. I use it myself, it's pretty great.
The Defiance UT3 FPS INI looks as though it definitely increases performance, but I'm fond of the slightly foggy look that covers the jaggies.

I still plan to try it out, though, if only during online multiplayer games. I'll likely stick to the stock INI while playing Campaign mode.

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo thats seksi tek, thanks for the post

I'm pretty sure the"fog/atmosphere/beergoggles" thing is called DepthOfField in the ini tweaks, you can turn that on if you like it. It makes the game look incredibly realistic, but it also makes enemies slightly blurry at a distance, and therefore harder to hit. Now that I've got my shiny new 8800GT, it's the only bit of eyecandy I disable, but I make sure to turn it on whenever I'm showing the game to my friends and family. :)

This reminds me of a Penny Arcade comic, which I can't find, where a bunch of gamers are boasting at how powerful their rigs are...and then proceed to turn off every graphical setting to make the game look like oatmeal. :)

When I attended LAN parties in Tulsa a few years back, there was a regular who turned his graphics in Tribes all the way down to pwn more.

So, yes, that really happens.

Yeah, I did that with Tribes 2. That game would run smooth as butter 99% of the time, but it was the choppy 1% that always ended up being life-or-death somehow.

I run UT3 at all high settings except for the DepthOfField and fog effects though.

Okay, the Defiance UT3 FPS INI file does deliver the performance boost it promises. I get great framerate all the time now, w00t!

I can play the game with limited shininess for now, then slide the Shiny Control(TM) all the way to the right after I build my new gaming rig (and only the good Lord knows when that will be).

LOL, Shagz I don't turn it down to get a better framerate, I am tryin to compensate for my Low Internet [if thats possible], I really need to get back to the good 'ol USA, as for framerate, I was averaging 152 fps on our server before I switched, Even though the Defiance UT3 INI sets my max at 120 fps, I seem to perform better and most definitely react quicker[as long as there are only 2 of us on, ROFL], but I smile whether I am Fragged or Fraggin someone else ^_^, Cya all online :)
