if you own a copy of it than you can d/l all you want on your computer

Not entirely correct.

If the shows that are on the internet were recorded off of tv, and transfered to the computer or recorded with some type of program or TV tuner, or on dvd from tv through a dvd-r then its legal to, since it was taped off the TV.

If they are copies of retail dvd's or VHS tapes (and transfered to computer) then its illegal and copy right infrigment.

Now if they are copies of DVD's or VHS from other countries and are not sold in the US, then its legal.

Have to be really careful, sometimes its hard to tell the difference. My mom's business has to be careful of that.

Here is the disclamer my mom has on her website
All the old TV shows listed are taped off of TV, not sold in the United States, therefore legal to share at minimal cost. They are either copies of DVDs from other countries or copies of DVDs transferred from VHS on a DVD-r standalone machine.
Same thing with newer TV shows.

I generally don't have a problem with downloading episodes that have recently aired and have not made it to a DVD box set. However, if anyone can freely record and keep a library of TV shows on their cable box (that is, Tivo), I don't know what that does to the DVD sets.

If the shows are recorded off of tv, then its legal to distribute quote "at minimum cost" (i.e. cost of media, wear and tear, and shipping costs). As long as the person distributing the show doesnt claim to charge profit off of it (i.e. each dvd pays for new products instead of profit). Of course some people charge $20 a dvd, which isnt legal.

Right now that's really still a grey area. Personally I don't have a problem with people downloading and sharing TV shows, but the people making the shows seem to be caring. They get the money to broadcast the shows from the sales of commercials which you aren't watching if you download the shows. Of course with Tivo, I never watch commercials anyway.

U should move to canada. In canada its legal to download and make a copy of any movie or song. As long as u don't distribute it. The motion picture andrecording industry are appealing it. But I don't see whats wrong with downloading a tv show, if after u watch it u delete it.

what if i sent u my computer to dl it in canada and then u send it back, would that be legal?

Wait wait wait wait, I always believed that vhs recording was permissible for your personal viewing pleasure, but the DISTRIBUTION of copyrighted material is very specifically prohibited by law. This would include television programs. Attempting to profit from distributing the recordings should incur additional infractions, no?

Yes, but if you distribute the TV programs recoreded at "minimum cost" and charge just shipping, material cost then its legal. Of course you can do like some people do on ebay, cheap thing with like 5x the cost of the item shipping to make profit. And the shows must be aired, cant be copies of VHS tapes like boughten from the history channel.
