Silly, you know that it is! Did you come here to reprimand me? :)

I saw this daily devotion in Streams in The Desert, By Mrs. Charles Cowman and I wanted to share it with you along with a thought. I think we get all excited about reading the Bible through in a year, some strive for more than that. I fear that if we cannot live up to our own expectations, we tend to feel that we have failed and give up altogether. I would like to encourage those who may not have a daily schedule of reading God's Word, to try with at least a verse a day and prayer to ask God to give you a hunger and thirst for His Word. Malohaut is doing a thread on Swordsmanship and he speaks about taking baby steps. I believe that is a wonderful idea for those who may not read the Bible daily, too. God will richly bless you for your effort.

His delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. Psalm 1:2

A man who loves the Word of God - a man who dwells upon what it says - a man who keeps a little text in his mind to think about as he is walking on his way, and who mediates upon it day and night - "whatsoever he doeth shall prosper." If you can find a man who carries out this direction and doesn't prosper, you can doubt the inspiration of the first Psalm; but find the man first. J.H.T.

When John Wanamaker, the merchant prince, was eleven years old, he purchased a Bible. In later years he said of this purchase: "I have, of course, made large purchases of property in my time, involving millions of dollars, but it was as a boy in the county, at the age of eleven years, that I made the greatest purchase. In a little mission Sunday school I bought a small red leather Bible for $2.75, which I paid for in small installments. Looking back over my life, I see that the little red Book was the foundation on which my life has been built, and the thing which has made possible all that has counted in my life. I know now that it was the greatest investment and the most important and far-reaching purchase I have ever made.

Last eve I passed beside a blacksmith's door,
And heard the anvil ring the versper chime;
Then looking in, I saw upon the floor
Old hammers, worn with beating years of time.

"How many anvils have you had," said I,
"To wear and batter all these hammers so?"
"Just one," said he, and then, with a twinkling eye,
"The anvil wears the hammers out, you know."

And so, thought I, the anvil of God's Word,
For ages skeptic blows have beat upon;
Yet, though the noise of falling blows was heard,
The anvil is unharmed - the hammers gone. Unknown

It's a difficult question.

I voted 'daily bread/daily feasting' because I don't think it will keep you from getting saved if you don't have it. However, I feel that it's important to read and to study if you have access to it.

For example, if you're a poor child in southern Mexico you may not have easy access to a Bible; but you can still become a Christian because of your love for God. But, in the United States, Bibles can easily be found in nearly all bookstores, and most malls and libraries. If you can get a hold of one, then you should earnestly read and study it as if you're searching for a lost treasure - that is how our attitude needs to be.

I voted both... :) I live on and by the word, without it, I am dead and doomed to death. Take away my breath now and I will live forever. Take away the word, and I shall die forever.

Well, I'm sure someone will catch me on the technical, but I will say it's my daily bread.

Jesus is the air I breathe

(Note: Yes, I know. In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, blah blah blah, yeah yeah. Technicalities, shmeknicalities =])

I agree, Bowser! There is no excuse for American's not to read our Bibles. Preacher says that we should have it so in our heart that if it were taken from us tomorrow, we would suffer no lack. As I ponder God's Word and its importance, I am reminded that even a hunger and thirst for His Word must come from His Spirit! He left nothing undone or impossible for us. God is so good to us.
GP, that is very profound! I love quotes and I think I could have a wonderful book of them just from this group!
lol Van! It's all about the heart! That's what He sees and I don't think you will have a problem in that area. :)
There really is not right or wrong answer. I think the more we read God's Word, the more we desire to read it. I think He woos us that way. It's our way to get to know Him and I think He likened it to daily bread because our Spirits will suffer starvation is we do not partake in the Bible's Goodness each and every day. I love the first quote I put there. How true, keeping our minds on God's Word will allow us to prosper, I think that includes but is not limited to our Spiritual prosperity.
Spiritual matters awestrike, amaze, and astound me. It is hard to imagine...He IS the Word! We most definitely need it daily!

I came because I love your post and your devotion. I knew you were just trying to sucker me into a few tid bits of knowledge.

The bible is our Sword, used for both offense and defense of the enemies attacks. The Sword is the Word, and the Word is our sword. Without it I may try and figure this whole thing out myself.

And that would be bad,

Very bad

its funny do you as a christian look down on another that does not read his or her bible? is it that legalistic to you, do you think God keeps a checklist of ok today Marcy read her bible heres your gold star type thing.

sorry i highly doubt it, am i advocating not reading by no means do not take it to that extreme the most important thing is to live the life that we are called to and we do not know that with out reading what Christ and his Apostles taught how we should live.

i would rather see one person living a life sold out of Christ than 1,000,000 people reading their bibles. the one person has more effect and impact on this world than the 1million christians who just read their bible to get their gold star

ok end my rant for now

Well LoJ,

I agree with you. I don't think God keeps account of how many times you have read your bible. What God is interested in is: You. Worship, prayer, spending time. This can and does include reading Gods word.

God did say he does keep track of something:

Malchi 3:16
Then those who feared the Lord talked with each other, and the Lord listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the Lord and honored his name.

I think it is kind a neat that God will take the time to listen and hear us as we interact on these boards, and remembers it. Even to the point of having it written, that which concerns us.

is that a general promise for all of us or was that something specifically stated to isreal GP? its a great verse but what is the context that it is in,

we can make the Bible say or mean anything we want it to say or mean but what we need to do is let the Bible say what it says

is this a promise for all of us or a promise God had with Isreal?

I don't believe we can say that everything before the "New Testament" page is limited to Isreal only. The God of Isreal is the same God I worship. The first half of Malchi 3, in my understanding of the chapter, deals with the first coming of Jesus and the second half deals with the second coming. But I am still learning, I don't have to be right.

We can put our name at the beginning of Genesis 1, with
Dear whatsyourname,
and
With Love,
God
at the end of Revelation.
Have you ever been head over heels in love hanging on every word of your loved one? God's Word is a love letter to us. I do not read it for any reason but to get to know the LORD. Nor do I encourage anyone to read it for any other reason. When God taught us to pray, He also encouraged us to ask for our daily bread. God is the Word. The Bible can and will bless us if we allow it, for the Bible is God. The Word is alive and God speaks to us through His Word. He is no respecter of persons either, therefore, EVERY Word is for us. What went for Israel, goes for us. Every jot and tittle will be fulfilled, and is written specifically for us. Furthermore, I do not think you can find a "sold out" man that does not hold God's Word in high regard.

And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. Luke 4:4

Granted, we are to live it, but how are we to live it if we do not know it? I started this thread to encourage others to read, even a verse each day. It is not how much you read that is important, but that we receive daily bread. Psalm 119 and the majority of the Book of Proverbs concerns knowledge and wisdom that comes from knowing the Word of God. The Bible is full of precious promises to those who read and live by the book. The Bible will convert our soul, make us wise, rejoice our heart, enlighten our eyes, it endures forever true and righteous, and it is more to be desired than much fine gold, sweeter than the honey and the honeycomb! That coming from Psalm 19: 7~ 10 It goes on to say that the Word warns us and keeping the Words give great reward...Therefore, I can assume you are 100%, absolutely, positively correct LOJ...the reward comes from keeping the Words of the Book. As MA was saying, it is our weapon of warfare. Jesus used it both offensively and defensively! The Bible is a lamp for our feet and a light for our path...our roadmap for life and how to live it!

Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them. Psalm 119:165

I love the Bible! Yet it appears not as strongly as I should.

That is really messed up! I don't think I have ever thought I was better than anyone in my whole, entire life! I think that your entire statement is very harsh judgment on someone you don't even know. In addition to being hurt, I am amazed that trying to encourage someone to read their Bible would tick a Christian off!

I would hate to see how that one person stumbled through trying to do God's will when they haven't spent time in His word. Every Christian should have a hunger for God's word. Noone in this post but you LoJ even suggested that we study God's word to the exclusion of doing his will. Studying God's word helps keep the fire going so that we act upon it.

Maybe noone else here will say this or even agree with it...but I have a hard time understanding how anyone who is a true Christian would not have a hunger for God's word.

lol...sorry that you feel some of us read the word of God for a gold star. That would be kinda silly. Most of us read God's word because God told us to.

I wrote this as it came to me. Thats all I can do : I am neither angry or attacking anyone, I am just sharing my thoughts and inspriations.

Yes, God Knows Marcylene Reads her Bible diligently, and shares it with all who will listen. Marcylene is the Only bible some people will ever hear and because she is a faithful servant, The Lord Jesus Christ will note this and He will let her know. So weather it’s a Gold Star or on her final day, or the Lord Jesus Christ takes her face in his gentle hands and looks her in the eye and Says "Thank You Faithful and Humble servant." Either way He will stand before the Father and say "She was faithful and this is why..." And he will stand up for her, because she stood up for Him!

Was it reading the Bible alone, No! it was grace and Faith, and thru Faith she read His Word. Was it legalistic of her to read the Bible, no it was HER FAITH. Her Love for the Lord Jesus Christ! We should read out of Love of Gods word, not because we have too.

Do I look down on someone who does not read their bible..
Yes and NO
Do I believe God keeps track of those who do?
Yes, Does God holds us accountable for what we do with what we have? YOU BETCHA!

With out the bible, I would not know what God would want of me, I Feel adamant that If Jesus is the Living water, then the word of God is the food. W/o the understanding of God’s word , we can not do GODS will! We are to test all things against Scripture. How can that be accomplished; unless I have an intimate understanding of the word of God???????

Do I look down on believers for not reading the bible, no. Though I am seriously challenged by leaders who do not strive to have an actuate and spirit filled understanding of Gods word. Yes, I try not too, But We guide and teach His flock, we are charged with Gods children. Not by my wishes, not what I think is correct, but out of scripture. The word of God is flawless! And that is what I am called to teach. To do this I need to know it.

IS that everyone’s calling, no, maybe you’re a prayer warrior, maybe you are a administrator, or maybe you are called to keep the grounds clean. Whatever your gifting is, you need the word, maybe God calls you to read, once a week. That is between you and GOD. But we all need to read it, we Teachers are more adamant about it. As worshippers are fine singing praise all day. I would rather spend the day in the bible, studying it intimately, but I still need to set time to worship God. There must be a balance.

I am called to read every day, Maybe not the bible, but something pertaining to scripture. Weather its spiritual warfare, maybe its the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. But I need to study something about scripture everyday or I feel like yuk! (Again This is my Calling)

But All Leaders are called to know the word. We are to have an understanding of the will of God THRU SCRIPTURE AND PRAYER.

And Faith without works is useless as well (James 2)
25In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? 26As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

Reading the bible isn’t good enough, you need to BELIEVE WHAT YOUR READING, you need to PRAY for understanding, and you need to strive for the Gifts of the Spirit. You need to understand the Great commission, the greatest commandment.

Thru the Word , I know I am seated in High Places with the King, that I have been charged to Heal the Sick, cast out demons and raise the dead, (Matthew 10:1) I know that I am saved, I know this the same way The Lord Jesus Christ knew what his Father did, THRU SCRIPTURE and through Prayer. Jesus knew to heal the sick, feed the poor, be a Leader by serving, because he read it! There is no death in heaven, no disease, no demons. HE read it in the WORD. That’s how he knew, he gave us the authority to do the same.

So does God give you a gold star for reading the bible? maybe not, but he gives you faith and understanding of what you are in his great design. He shows you that thru Grace; you are Sons and Daughters of the MOST HIGH KING! And nothing can stop you from furthering the kingdom of heaven

Thru the Word, you gain Faith, thru faith you gain Prayer, thru Prayer you gain Obedience thru obedience you gain separation of SIN and all that GOD has you destine for.

Does God keep track, you betcha, and he’s watching to see what you do with HIS WORD AND GIFTS

Thanks for your ear!
