Linux help needed

Computers are like air conditioners...
They stop working when you open Windows.

:D

Honestly, Try Xubuntu, using the X system its a nice clean version. I would also look into SuSE or Gentoo

You can install gentoo on just about anything, of course managing it is a royal pain and it isn't that suited to laptops out of the box (well you have to configure it for anything anyway lol)

I wonder what the issue with fedora was? I have yet to see a system I cant get that OS onto.

Why not use Windows vista or XP?

Because:
-Vista sucks
-XP still costs money
-Linux has a much more productive environment
--Performs better in many tasks
--Can have a much better battery life if tweaked
--Has package management
--No virii or spyware
--Doesn't give up the ghost randomly after 2 months of use
--Is free!

did you read my blog post? I don't like the windering of Linux that ubuntu has done..too many hoops to jump through.

no lan, wifi or sound.

i'm not looking for games. i have an xp desktop for that..:) I have two servers here..b0th run linux..my wife runs xp for now and i run xp on my dekstop. My laptop is for my business and i have no need for winders. There's nothing i can't do in Linux that i can't do in winders. If i want to run vista effectivly i'd need to take my ram up to 2 gigs instead of the 512 it hs now.

dude i cant stand kubuntu or ubuntu. xubuntu 64bit fiesty fawn, heck yes, i love it. SuSE or mandrake are the only other ones ive heard "out of the box" experiences from

Maybe you should list the offending chipsets (audio, net, wireless) and we could look up the offending drivers and you could install them in the distro of your choice. Ubuntu ships with binary drivers iirc, and may be using ndiswrapper for the wireless and/or net. Their install system is very complex, it even has the same failure rate as upgrading windows.

The audio sometimes is disabled out of the box until you mess with alsamixer a little. I usually have to push a few buttons before it switches over to my coax digital out.

The current RC of 7.10(kubuntu) works out of the box. It uses madwifi for the atheros chipset and open source drivers for the sound and lan and video(although you can load proprietary drivers for the vid). I just need a Linux version that works with this thing.

It is a radeon xpress 200 m based system.

well fc8 hangs at boot initializing the atheros wlan card, centos5 gives me no wireless(and not multimedia which is how centos is designed), I really disklike ubuntu(i'll go back to vista before i do that). Mepis 7.0 is no better than pclinuxos(no lan, sound, wifi). Can anyone suggest a linux version that works reasonably well with this machine? It is a radeon xpress 200m based system with a realtek 8190 nic and a atheros 6000 wlan card. heck even backtrack 3 won't boot on this stupid thing. BT two would boot but would not shutdown. I am beginning to rue the purchase of this laptop. I may upgrade the ram to two gigs..give it to genesis and buy me a certified Linux laptop(or maybe an xp one since Linux is not working well).
