Linux installations- what version to use.

I ordered a new hard drive and i think I'll try a linux setup. I don't know anything about Linux. What would the best version of Linux OS to use for a computer mostly used for gaming?

Linux + Gaming = Not gonna work.

From what I've seen, it's a pain to get games to work in Linux. Most games don't have a Linux version so you have to use third party software to run them and the results aren't usually very good. I haven't tried any of this personally but it's what I've heard.

Not necessarily.

ColdSteel: If UT2004 is your game of choice, Linux might be the way to go. Epic, in a fit of brilliance, released a Linux version of UT2004 along with a Windows version. (Valve, get it together!) I'm almost certain that one license (purchase) covers both versions, so you shouldn't have to spend any more money. I'm not familiar with Linux UT2004 myself, but a bit of Google-fu should go a long way.

Hehe, in a fit of brilliance. Very true, more companies need desperately to do that (I would love to switch to linux). But yeah, go with Ubuntu since you're new, that's what I use and it's wonderfully easy (comparitively). Wine is an excellent freeware windows emulator (thing...), and Cedega costs like $5 a month but is easier to use and I think has a 10 day free trial thing. Play with it, you might have some nerdy fun.

I've tried both Wine and Cadega and didnt have much luck. Wine got a few programs to work, but no games. Cedega has a nice GUI to use and emulate though.

First of all, gaming in the linux environment is still in it's early stages. There are emulators out there that can bridge the gap, but their often buggy and not worth the time and effort, personally speaking.

If your still interested, check out ubuntu [ubuntu.com]. It is my favorite linux distro. Very [new] user friendly. Have fun.

Hi all, thanks for the replies. I've been doing some reading at ubuntu and it has potential. A lot of users fixing problems.
I also found a Linux based OS called Mandrake but the name is now changed to Mandriva. It is game friendly from what I've read.
I tried a linux OS cd called Knoppix which boots from CD. It was alot different than windows. Pretty cool desktop. I'll still going to play around with it some more. I don't have to have it installed or uninstall windows.
My drive is supposed to be delivered Monday.
300gig Sata2 Seagate with 5 year warranty for 149.00 with a 50.00 mail in rebate ($99.00 worth of Wooot)
I'm still going to keep my 74 gig WD raptor with XP pro OS installed. Maybe dual boot and put UT 2004 just on the raptor.
I can't wait until I get it going I've still got to beat Myst 3.

Whoa! 300gigs... nice.

I wouldn't exspect a true gaming environment out of the Mandrivia Gamer Edition. It looks to me like a marketing ploy.
