Linux v. Windows v. Mac v. whatever

that is a form of debate, eventually you will get sick of it and stop posting :P

last I checked I had the freedom of free speech and you dont have power over me.

I have a production IIS machine that has to be restarted every 2 days, its unacceptable.

that is too bad... dont accept it... it doesnt have to be that way.

the original windowsnt was designed for one of the best processors ever by some of the best programmers on the planet. most people prob dont know much about DEC and VAXs and or DEC Alphas yet that is where the main heritage came from for server side.

it is important to use professional server hardware with more resources than are necessary... typically POWER, PROCESSOR, RAM, and SCSI facilities.

excellent high end multiprocessor server hardware that was extremely expensive new can be had for pennies on the dollar if you know exactly what to buy and who from.

although it is getting better, people have put too much faith too fast in newer hard disk and processor subsystems and/or firmware

*most* run of the mill off the shelf *consumer* computer store components slapped together are not good (read designed, engineered, or stable) enough for it.

workstation design does not equal server implementation

the other side of it is one must understand the proper way to sucessfully design, engineer, implement, and administrate Windows Server software and why. what is necessary and what is not. it starts at the design stage. there is too much to just install it all and leave things (processes and more etc)running that are not necessary.

last but not least... there are 7 layers in the OSI reference model. it is important to realize that although there is a "network" layer for lack of better languange, one can not assume that the problems they are dealing with (windows server or otherwise) are in layer 3... they could be somewhere else.

for example info only - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSI_model

anyways, i prefer linux (since approx 1993)... windows has mainly been necessary to meet client needs and that is what it has always been about anyways or it wouldnt exist in any network.

i measure most uptime in months....

here is a high end cisco 7206 router
br1 uptime is 35 weeks, 5 days, 10 hours, 52 minutes
here is a random high end cisco switch
c29 uptime is 35 weeks, 5 days, 10 hours, 50 minutes

most of the servers i have see kernel upgrades every 90 days and sometimes less along with specific security updates so i apologize that i cannot show you close to a year of uptime there.

hopefully i am just reiterating what everyone already knows anyways...

thanks, kind regards, and God bless,

Wow. I definately don't understand anything that's being said in this thread. I'm not a computer geek... more a motorhead... but even then I don't know much :-P

I say you've got only a couple of hours before the mods come and squish you with their thumbs. Their beautiful... powerful... thumbs...

I've never ever had major problems with windows and with the exception of ME (lol) I've never heard as many complaints come out of any 100 people as have come out of VK. :P

Considering linux has been shown to run for YEARS without reboot, whenever I have to leave winderz up to download junk I always have to check on it every few hours. Linux I just leave up 24/7, I have good hardware and I know it wont fail.

and the OSI model, I have taken up to and including net3 in cisco, I ran out of time to take 4 in High School. I love it and that brings up another complaint, it is a ton easier to debug in linux then it is in windows. whereas in windows it takes approximately 10 clicks to see if something is detected, it takes 1 command in linux. I hate the driver system in windows, I have this particular hardware that will never let me install different drivers. This is bad because the update fixes image quality on a certain tvtuner, the stuipid driver system thinks the old driver is fine and dandy and refuses to replace it. Another good piece of hardware is a wireless usb adapter, works fine in linux but windows installs the wrong driver for a entirely different chipset and refuses to change it.

I have set up several servers including windows and linux servers, I had to work with several windows servers this year to get a company up to speed on reports and internal scripting with mapguide. The server which handled IIS for mapguide would restart every ~24 hours and have to be rebooted due to load.

If people decide it's too much trouble and just quit talking to you, it's a good sign that there is something wrong with your approach. You haven't convinced anyone of anything.

Debate or debating is a formal method of interactive and position representational argument. Rules governing debate allow groups and individuals to discuss and decide issues and differences. Debate is an aspect of argument which is distinct from logical argument, in that it encompasses aspects of human persuasion which appeal to emotional responses.
Note the "interactive" element, as well as "persuasion."

And you're right; you are allowed to say whatever you want, within the rules established by CGA and ToJ. That doesn't mean what you say is nice or effective.

it helps if both parties are willing to listen, I deal with windows machines all the time, I dont like it, and encourage linux wherever. I am meerly stating what I have experienced with windows. I know fully well how to run a windows machine, to say that I "do not have experience" is a insult and is taken as such.

unfortunately I was not allowed full access to that machine, I was allowed to review some data, most of it looks like a problem with the isapi plugin. Again this problem was reported over a year ago and so far has not been resolved.

I am a software developer for a Fortune 500 company that spends over 1 billion annually on technology. To be honest, linux takes a back row seat in the production environment to true unix based systems. I am talking about 16+ processor multi terabyte servers. Next up are Windows based server farms. Because of recent acquisitions of smaller companies, we have only recently started supporting Sun based servers. Linux is still very much a niche market for small business and academia. There are only a couple of projects that make use of Linux as a workstation and then only as a support PC. The techs still do the majority of their day to day work on on Windows PC.

I see Linux taking another 5+ years before they are seen as an entry level contender in the large scale production server market.

Freedom of speech only accomplishes one thing. It allows stupid people to say stupid things and show how stupid they truly are.

I use Windows, I always have and always will. I haven't had in major problems with it and it lets me play games and surf the net. That's all I need. Why do I want to take the extra time to figure out Linux and use some lame emulator when I can just as easily play it on Windows?

p.s. This post wasn't directed at anyone in particular.

most people dual boot linux/windows, this works great. you do everything you want to in linux then game in windows, an amazing concept.

the latest report stated as windows top 1, bsd based 2 and 3, linux 4 and 5.

Linux is developing incredibly fast, already linux has outpaced windows in terms of hard development. It is becoming increasingly popular in the asian market, which is extremely troubling for microsoft. And already it is a hard compeditor, look at how microsoft is investing in freebsd/linux development.

*marvels at vibrokatana's triple post*
