Looking for a game...

After playing some CoD:MW2 and being a big fan of the Battlefield Series, I was looking for a free game that is similar to these and actually good... I have come accross a few good online FPSs, but they all seem to be made by Korean companies with a grind...and many other complaints I am not going into here...

List of Games tried:

  • Combat Arms
  • Cross Fire
  • Battlefield Heroes
  • Americas Army 3

Games looking at but still not played:

  • WarRock
  • Alliance of Valiant Arms
  • F.E.A.R. Combat

Needs:

  • LAN and/or Online private room creation...
  • Decent game modes...
  • Decent graphics...
  • We prefer more big map, tactical action, over pray and spray games (CS, CF, CA)...
  • Must be free (or under $5), have 4 people who want to play with only 1 being able to afford games...
  • If it has to be a grinder FPS (like CF or CA) it needs to have free (earned through ingame actions) permanent weapons, and not the stupid rentals...
  • Be fun for anywhere between 2-6 players...

Would be nice if but not necessary:

  • A leveling/reward system similar to that in MW2...
  • Class System...
  • Character creation...

Thank you for your time, and thank you for future posts :)

Okay, I tried out FEAR Combat...and have to say it is pretty awesome, lots of features and nice game play... But I only got one kill per like every 20 deaths (people are pretty crazy in there), and your "profile" doesn't seem to be contected with any type of online saving/ranking, which is fine, but it would've been a bonus... Definitly going to play this one a little while longer and see if I get any good... This is a VERY good free game...

Waiting for more games to try :)

What about Quake Live? It's free, it's fast-paced, and you can play a match in 10-15 minutes. It's terrific for "lunch break" gaming.

I love(d) QuakeLive, but the big thing for me is setting up a private game with just me, my wife, my bro, and my friends...and the last time I played QL, it did not only not allow you to set up private matches, but there was no LAN support :( I would ignore the fact it does have LAN if I could set up private matches... ...but for what it is...it is awesome... :)

Hmm... Day of defeat MAY be good for you. You can play LAN, and if you open up some ports and set up a temp dedi (very easy to do with their software, you can have a private game that lets farther away friends connect. The game is $5 on steam (Don't get Day of defeat source, it stinks). It is a pretty good shooter, and there is a very large and active christian server in it (I may happen to be a part of it). Only problem with it (with your requirements) is that it's not like MW2, and there is a bit of a learning curve. But watch some videos of it if your interested.

If you want Quake Live with LAN, keep an eye out for multiple copies of Quake 3 on the cheap. Quake Live is essentially Quake 3 in a web browser plus a few upgrades; the core game is still available as a standalone product.

EDIT: Last I heard, id Software is considering the possibility of private servers--for a fee, of course. It may be something Tribe of Judah could look into if the price is right and there are members willing to donate the necessary funds.

I enjoy playing urban terror from time to time. A couple of good clean servers too.. I believe the paladin servers are clean.

After my friend and my wife sat down with some of these games...we found we enjoyed Cross Fire and AVA (Alliance of Valiant Arms) best... FEAR was pretty awesome but the "learning curve" was rather large... Currently we will be playing around in CF and AVA, but I am still taking suggestions and looking into other games...but I really need to cut down my game testing time...making my wife a little angry with me spending most of my free time trying out games... :) (the dishes need done...)

I'm fairly positive that the original DoD was a free mod if you already owned half-life (if you didn't own HL than you would need to buy the stand-alone). (source) You should check file-planet or do a search for the free mod if you already own HL.

I don't think that DoD:Source is as bad as everyone says it is. Sure they nerfed my beloved KAR and we lost the British along the way (with the even more beloved Enfield), but the game is just as fun to me when I play it. And for the record, I've played DoD since the time you used to bleed and would die if you didn't bandage yourself (I believe that was part of the beta), so I'm not some yokel who never played the original and is just uninformed.

All that aside, there are no rpg elements to this game. It is FPS through and through.

DoD 1.3 is retail. If you really want to get it for free, there are earlier versions of the mod. Only trouble is, you'd be by yourself. I am an avid DoD player. But it's good that you have found Crossfire and AVA to be good.

Patriot, DoD source is sooooo much different. I'm good at 1.3, but kind of am stinkage in source :)

Looks fun and all...

The big thing for me is I have 4 computers here that can run high end games...

I have 2 people that come over and play games with my wife and I...

I do not have the income to afford games...

So I am looking for a fun game(s) that we can play together on these computers when we are all here...OR...when just 3 of us are here, the 4th can play from his house...

We are having fun with AVA and CF...they were easy to set up and easy to get in and playing...

Just a little more info for future recommendations...

Yeah, that seems unfortunate.

You could also try, Parabellum.

http://parabellum.xg1.net/

Its the only free MMOFPS that has much better graphics.

Yeah, maybe if I didn't spend all my extra money I got from tax refunds for the last 2 years on these computers I would have money for games :P LOL

I am definitely looking into this one, is SEEMS to be actually dev'd in America, and not Korea... :P Even though K2 is it's publisher, Acony, the Dev, seems to be here in America...

EDIT: I also have yet to check out WarRock, which I have been discouraged to do for it lack of any good reviews...but I really want something more like the battlefield games instead of CS...

Update...

I pretty much got bored with all those free games...I mean AVA is a great game...but an hour a week is enough to get my fix of it...the lack of content just doesn't keep you playing...also Parabellum was cool, but there is like no one playing in the beta :(

I have now switched over to playing the Orange Box, since I got it like 2 years ago and never played it...and I am also keeping my eye out for good multiplayer/co-op games that are cheap/free for my wife and I to play... She plays WoW, but I just don't think I want to get back into that after finally stepping out of it after over 5 years...

I'd recommend watching sales on Team Fortress 2. It was recently on sale for half price ($10 as opposed to the regular retail price of $20) and it's been as cheap as $2.49 (though that was an EXTREMELY limited time offer and I doubt we'll see TF2 that cheap again for a few years).

Yeah, she seemed interested after seeing you can be a healer in an FPS...hehe...

Medics ftw.

Medic is my main class, so I'm happy to teach someone genuinely interested in playing Medic how to improve.

Well, I am sure she would be interested...just waiting on a sale now... I preferred Sniper until I got out of practice into public servers...I couldn't hit anyone, so now I seem to switch on and off from the Soldier and the Heavy...

I find the sniper is one of the harder classes to master online, if not the hardest class to master online. In most cases it also requires some decent support to cover your flanks otherwise it doesn't work very well.
