Lore

So, I've generally ignored WoW lore ... I click through quest text and when an NPC is making a speech in a dungeon, that = "fetch a snack" time for me.

However, after watching Blizzcon ... partly because Metzen seemed excited about it, and partly to improve my understanding of the Legend of Red Shirt Guy ...

I bought "the Shattering" novel and read it. The last time I read "branded" SF novel was probably 20 years ago, and I cringed at sentences like "they sat down for a simple meal of Dalaran Sharp, Mulgore spice bread, and Kodo stew" ... but overall, it wasn't a bad read. And more than that, even someone with only passing absorption of the Warcraft storyline over the past 5 years, was taken aback at some of the plot twists that are inserted in the pre-Cataclysm runup. Whole different world.

Anyhow, is the book worth the outrageous $26 cover price for the hardback edition that's the only thing available right now? Absolutely not. Maybe it's worth the $16 actual price in Amazon or the $12 Kindle price ... and probably the $8 paperback price when it eventually comes out. But imo, having read it pre-Cata WILL undoubtedly make the 80-85 trek a little more interesting and rich.

Go read this. It's Deathwing's Bio and Story as it pertains to us. It'll take a few minutes...but i guarantee that after reading...you will want to kill him so bad you won't be able to stand it. At least thats how I felt...and I'm not a lore guy.

I've always loved the Warcraft lore. Even though the quality of writing is subpar in many of the novels, I think the story overall is really fascinating. You miss a lot of it in WoW, unfortunately, but there is just so much good stuff there it's amazing.

I remember reading about the great people in the Valley of Heroes when walking into Stormwind, and then seeing them for the first time was probably the most exciting thing I've experienced in a game, not to mention all the (sometimes subtle) nods throughout the game and quests.

WoW lore is probably the best in any game today in my opinion. I've been gaming for almost 20 years now, and honestly I have not come into contact with Lore for another game that is as in depth and rich as the Warcraft universe. I am really looking forward to reading The Shattering.
