DAYTON, Ohio — Injecting a new twist into the presidential race, John McCain on Friday introduced Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential running mate at a rally that also celebrated the Republican presidential candidate’s 72nd birthday.

“My friends and fellow Americans, I am very pleased and very privileged to introduce to you the next vice president of the United States, Governor Sarah Palin of the great state of Alaska,” McCain told a capacity crowd of 12,000 at the Nutter Center.

Woo, hottest governor from the coldest state! I think the papers here are going to crazy with that news. :P

I resent that about McCain. Hes barely older than when Ronald Reagan was voted in and served.

I think this is a brilliant move on McCains part though, Theres nothing in the news about obama or the democratic convention :D

A vote for McCain is a vote for Palin! We all know McCain's going to die in office.

A vote for McCain is a vote against America... He'll probably keep Palin in the closet most of the time anyway.

Seriously... you think the VP has much power?

And to be honest, the president doesn't have a whole lot of power either.(Or, shouldn't. Each one seems to be usurping more and more.)
The real power is in Congress.

Hopefully no one believes electing a single "miracle" person to the office of U.S president can change our country for the better, because that'd be terribly naive.

Congress is where the power is at, Congress is where so many thousands of poor decisions have been made over the years, and it's due to the corrupt Congress of this country that our nation is in such dire trouble.

So why bother getting excited one tiny bit about who McCain picked for VP? He won't be running the show, and neither will she.

I think it's funny that a lot of women will probably vote for McCain because of his vice, though. Like how your crusade turned out, Susan B. Anthony?

Why bother getting excited? have you noticed we're talking about McCain and not obama? and the media is doing the same. Thats why we're getting excited haha

Just to be fair, wasn't the DNC over yesterday? That would be why nobody is talking about it :P

Edit: That wasn't intended to be snarky or anything. It really is a genius strategy on his part, and the Republicans are probably loving it. "Hey hey, look at us, we put a woman up for nomination for VP before the Dems did! Dems hate women woo!"

I also posted this on another thread but: I would rather not see Obama or McCain in office, but this may give Palin a chance to build up to be the first woman president and one who would get my vote!

I think it's pretty pathetic that the only reason she got called on to be the VP is because she's a female - only used to get votes and nothing beyond (even Obama has more credentials to offer in almost every way).

Way... to... go...

I kinda give him and his staff props for their timing, it was pretty smart to time it like he did... but I think anyone could have planned that out.

Like a reporter on PBS said "They [Hillary and Sarah] aren't like Lego blocks where you can pull out a red one and replace it with a green one." I totally agree.

I doubt it will actually get him in the White House.

Regardless of who you support the media's press coverage has been extremely, sickenly, bias towards giving air time to Obama over Mcain (and even over Hillary to a degree during the run offs). I am glad to hear a tiny bit of buzz has been given to Mcain, even if due to his running mate, although I am sure it will be a drop in an ocean -_-. At any rate I have long since grown tired of watching any of it especially since little of the media hoopla shows the core values which a person should decide their vote by anyway. I wish you could impeach the media or something...

She's not just female but supposedly more conservative than McCain. In other words it's also a move to ease questions about McCain's own conservativeness and bring back republicans who where not going to vote for him. I haven't researched her yet though. Really though it's the norm to select a running mate on the basis of garnering more votes. I can't say I am surprised.

What I do find interesting is we are going to see a first this election either way it goes. Either a female vice president or a black president (excuse me HALF black president. Funny how that works, if you are half black and half white you are instantly black -_- ).

The thing about Palin that makes here appealing to conservative voters has nothing to do with the fact that she is an attractive woman. I won't say that it doesn't help the with the shallow-votes, but...

Palin is a mother of 5, including a baby with downs syndrome - she's Pro-Life. Check.
Her oldest son is in the military. That shuts down the arguments about McCain "supporting the military but his son not enlisting." Check.
She is a lifer in the NRA. Sportsmen and gun owners rejoice. Check
She's a no-nonsense kinda person that isn't afraid to ruffle feathers. Check.

She is exactly what the right-wing voters have been looking for in this election season.

Will it matter in the long run, even if she becomes the veep? Not likely. But since McCain is fairly neutral in his voting record, having a hard-line conservative on the ticket really helps draw in the people that felt they had no true candidate. As much as I was struggling between Obama and McCain (because I didn't like either of them), the choice of VP candidates sealed my vote.

Will McCain die in office? Who knows. I'm not banking on it, but I seriously doubt that he can keep Palin "in the closet" if they get elected. I don't think she'll put up with it.

As for the importance of the timing? Did you noticed how many times they aired the Oprah interview yesterday? I heard it once... Oprah is quite possibly the most influential woman in America, and McCain/Palin shut her down. That's right, very few people heard her babbling about how Obama's speech changed her life (while most analysts were suggesting there was nothing new in his final DNC speech...odd)

Anyway, don't take it from me. Search for her voting records, public releases, issue-stances... While it may be the gender-card, that only scratches the surface.

Palin has one glaring flip-flop. in her speech she said she turned down the road to nowhere project..but in reality she sent a memo stating she would like projects like that to get pushed through while her congressional delegation is in a strong position.

From what I've read Pallin is a good person. The fact she hasn't been in major politics very long is a big plus in my book. I don't think McCain picked her just because she's a woman either. She's a staunch conservative which is another good reason for McCain to have picked her.

Who says she got called on just because she's female and just to get votes? The media? You? McCain? Maybe she's just a fresh face with a good clean record, who happens to be a woman.

I had never heard of her before Friday. But now I think I like her more than I like McCain.

Are we comparing her credentials to Obama for some reason? Okay. They're both relatively young, both in their first terms of their current office. The big different?? He's running as the lead, for President. She's running for VP. And Obama has the guy with more experience running UNDER him. Backwards, I think.

One would imagine that is part of the strategy to attract more of Hillary's supporters, yes. It may not be ALL of the reason, but it sure didn't hurt the decision.

There's a reason people's "advisers" are called "strategists" on the news channels.
