Microsoft "Live" vs. Google "Apps"

Yesterday M$'s full essentials pack left beta...and...I was rather impressed by it... I am a full Google user: email, calendar, to-dos, RSS feeds, documents, and much more... However, after checking out M$'s Live essentials, and their online functionality...I may be making the switch...(aside from email)...

I currently do not have the time to do a write up and comparison of each, but I will get to that sometime in the next few days...

Check them out, and let me know what your thoughts are...

M$: Live.com | Live Essentials Pack
Google: Google.com | Google Pack

I am currently spending quite some time comparing the two, and so far M$ is...well...winning in my book... I know...shocking... :p

Microsoft does exceptionally well when they focus on their 'core' platform (and by that I mean their Desktop OS and Office Software) and anything they do to enhance that platform is generally going to be high quality. MS has the advantage over Google here, because this kind of thing is their home turf.

I don't usually use many of the features offered in Live Essentials (or Google's), but I will check it out.

Nothing to do with live per se, but I'll say I've tried MS security essentials lately for antivirus, and it's great. Doesn't take over and kill the computer, but does the job well. And it's free with Windows.

How does it compare to AVG Anti-Virus? That's the one I've been using since my wow account was hacked and I've really liked it.

M$ Essentials Anti-Virus in multiple tests has out done AVG and Avast, both in protection, detection, and footprint... :)

I've made some good money off of AVG by removing viruses from some computers recently. They were all running AVG. Switched them to Essentials.

Really tho, does anyone get Viruses these days? They are almost always trojans/blended threats that come in through a fake email or link and nothing stops them, because the user is tricked into allowing them.

I clean malware off computers all week long for work and I see computers with MSessentials have them just as much as AVG, Norton and the rest. MSe gets backdoored all the time on my clients' pcs. If you really want trojan protection you need a DNS filter plus proactive malware protection like malwarebytes (paid) and/or threatfire.

I choose MSe because it has a low footprint and requires little to no interaction for the user but I seriously doubt that it helps in protection anymore then all the other anti-virus programs. AVG is fine, Avast is fine, MSe is fine, DON'T pay for anti-virus, but don't only have AV, you need more.

On topic: Yeah the new MS apps look real good. I will def be using them and recommending them to clients.

Now if they could just get the win7 phones to take off, can't believe I have to wait till next year on Sprint!

Google apps rocks pretty hard for the corporate environment. I used Word Live in beta and it was OK, but nowhere near the level of collaboration and data interop with Google apps.

Currently I am using MSe + Chrome + Adblock + WOT + K9 web filtering + Common sense... :D Anything else you would suggest? (I haven't been infected or had any malware issues in over 5 years...)

Newp you are solid, all fantastic choices. Common sense playing a huge factor... i can't believe the "intervention" show I just watched where the guy had spent 100,000s of dollars paying off the Nigerian email scams. He was so positive they had money to give him and he only had to give them his bank account numbers to get it. It was his full time job just responding to the emails. Of course he was addicted to pain killers as well. No clue why his wife didn't have his accounts shut down but just watched as he blew his retirement away.
