Need advice on (possibly) purchasing notebook

Notice: Laptops are not good for gaming...unless you wanna blow $5000 on one, but then it isn't a laptop, it is called a desktop replacement...because with all the stuff that they have to do to those "high graphics" laptops, you get like an 8 minute battery life...Even the XPS's crap out because one year later your graphics card doesn't matter anymore...lol... However, Dell will upgrade for you...for only $1000!...LOL...

That's not as much the case now as it used to be. They're putting a much higher quality of video card in laptops now, so they're not bad for gaming. If you compare a desktop with a laptop, the desktop will always win, but new games can be very playable on a good quality laptop. Although i don't play many games on my work laptop, it has Raedon videocard in it and games look very nice. Now, the battery understandably drain much more quickly when gaming, but it lasts a whole lot longer than 8 minutes. Regardless, I do have this wonderful invention called a power cord that resolves that issue.

Most of my gaming takes place on my macbook. I'm much more limited on what I can do with that because I bought an entry level model (macbook instead of macbook pro) that comes with a budget videocard. However, I've been told that the macbook pro works great for games. A big problem with mac though, has always been the fact that it's much harder to find games that will run on a mac. Fortunately more and more companies are starting to make titles that work on the mac. Blizzard has always made their titles cross platform (which are the primary games I play). Of course that isn't as much an issue as it used to be anyway since you are now able to install Windows on the mac. Again, the battery does drain much more quickly, but plugging into power with the cool little magnetic power cord makes that a non-issue.

My Inspiron E1705 plays TeamFortress 2 beautifully on a 17" widescreen display. I get 2-3 hours battery life at the maximum (wireless disabled, brightness turned down, running only the programs I'm using at the moment). Yes, it's a desktop replacement, but it didn't cost anywhere near $5000.

In short, I <3 my notebook.

Now I just need to find a notebook nearly as shiny (though with a smaller screen and a less beefy video card) for my wife. Eventually.
