Need united computer problemsolvers

A computer at work, in it's current state:

Windows update based on KB908531 refuses to install (I've attempted to install it 10 times and Windows Updater just redownloads it and attempts to install it again, over and over)
Kapersky Internet security service will not load (manually or automatically) (1503 error)
Rootkit revealer service refuses to load (1503 error)
Sophos Rootkit finds no rootkits

Prior to this:

Spybot search and destory finds mutliple spyware and malware programs. All cleaned
PrevxCSI finds mutliple spyware and malware programs as well, including key loggers but can't remove them until I purchase the software. LOL, I"m not purchasing jack if there is a possibility of key logger on the computer. If finds different spy and malware then Spybot.
stopZILLA finds even more but is scan ware also only
Many registry scanners find all kinds of errors, some 200 some upto 500. None will clean the errors unless I purchase the software.
At one point in time, Kapersky did load, and it found a heur variant in explorer.exe
Explorer.exe file had a date of 2001
Other computers explorer.exe had a date of 2004
Used WinXP Pro CD to replace explorer.exe
This was the only time Kapersky did load, it hasn't loaded since.

I have spent 6 hours on this and I strongly suspect there is a toolkit on the system. Anybody have any suggestions, I'll take them.

: Unacceptable solutions: Switch to Linux, Switch to MAC. These computers are running Manufacturing software that DOES NOT RUN ON LINUX OR MAC OR EMULATORS. So I don't want to hear about it and you can leave your opinions about them or windows to yourself.

You probably have much more exp than I but my newbie suggestion is to...

1. Make a registry backup before making any changes.
2. Download highjack this http://www.whatthetech.com/hijackthis/ (hmmm not sure if it matters what version you get) and try posting the log file in their forums.
3. Pray and be sure to thank Jesus if you fix it :)

I can definitively state most of the registry errors you get are non-consequential and simply the result of sloppy programming. I've run Norton on a clean install of Windows Xp Pro with only the windows updates on it and gotten many errors.

Just wondering but do you have access to all the software needed to do a clean install or are you stuck with trying to fix it?

This is a very old kb patch. XPSP3 will contain this patch. you can get sp3 from several known good outlets or wait for MS to put it out in a week or so. Then you can create an install cd with sp3 slipstreamed into it..:)

I suggest using AVG and Adaware to clean it, but I have heard of this before, and the only known solution was reformatting...so, I suggest back up and reformat...

Didn't know this was coming. Good info :) It is strange that it refuses to stick. The overal feedback on the symptoms on some forums is that a toolkit is present with either a user actively denying software resources or the toolkit itself being written in such away to deny resources automatically based on certain criteria that some programs that I am trying to instal uses. No way to confirm it but it's the general way I figured a toolkit would work, else writting one would be pointless.

I'm at this point. Had I know how long this process would've been, Purchasing a new computer and reinstalling OS, MSOffice and Enterprise software would've been no more then 2 hours. Backing up and restoring the necessary data files (email, spreadsheets etc) 30 minutes before and after. Total time 3 hours instead of 6. Blaargh.

this has nothing to do with either an amd or intel cpu.

GP:

Once I spend more than 30 minutes on a problem like this..backup, reformat, reload. Less time wasted for me and my client.

1503 occours when windows attempts to start a service but it takes too long to do so, essentially a time out issue

I remember when SP2 came out.... and it was not a happy memory either. will sp3 be better and not break systems for the first 3 months?

sp2 was a major change of windows xp's internals. SP3 is 90% rollup of all updates since the beginning with a few minor tweaks. As with all Major updates prepare for the worst though.

I agree, you will never get that time back, (back, format reload.) Sometimes I do this on principle alone :)

Wipe and reload, a geeks best friend

You need to reference Noname's thread about his comp regarding backup. Then you need to set a stick of dynamite next to all the computers and blow them up.... and try again. :D

Other than that I am out of ideas. :(

When you start the computer, did you go into safe mode? This will help spybot get rid of almost everything. I use spybot, and I also use super antispyware. here is a link to super antispyware: http://www.superantispyware.com/
I also suggest CCleaner. It is here: http://www.ccleaner.com/
CCleaner actually has a portable version that doesnt need to be installed, so you can run it from a thumb drive or cd. Check your spybot on how many things are blocked in its list against another computer that has it. This number can be a lot different. There is a lot of malware out there that can mee up spybot, so it will not update, but tell you it has. Good Luck.
