Network Problem

Ok I have a problem.

I have a wireless broadband router with a 4 port switch. The router acts as a DHCP server for my network as well.

Previously, I had my desktop and my laptop running through the router and all was happy and kind.

Then I got a new laptop.

I could not remember my WEP password (or the router's admin password) so I had to do a factory reset.

Still with me?

Anyways, I got everything hooked back together, and i have a problem. Not internet.

I play around with a little more, and do have internet on the laptop, through both a wire and the wireless interfaces.

It's only the desktop that won't play nice.

It sees the router as I can get the router's web config and can ping the router and the laptop. If I hook the desktop directly to the cable modem it works.

It's only when it's behind the router that the desktop cannot get on the internet.

After two days of playing with settings and running ipconfig hundreds of times I am about at wits end over the whole thing.

As I see it I have two options currently
1) Do a system restore on my desktop, and see if a factory new computer works.
2) buy a new router and see if that's the issue.

Does anyone else have any other ideas?

Thanks!

Do you possibly have the properties on TCP/IP manually set on desktop? Cause most routers will allow Static content on DHCP servers.

That would have been my first guess. If that isn't the case try a refresh/renew. Go to Network Settings, right click the connection, and click repair.

I had done all those various things, multiple times.

Ultimately I went and bought a new router and everything works perfectly.

Oooohhh... now i remember. WE had that problem. We think it had to do with the router. The wireless worked, but our hardwired desktop would refuse to connect with the internet, through the router. We comlained to D-Link and got a new one.

It had something to do with the router NOT having an on off switch, and i guess we kept "frying" it by pullling the plug. it worked fine after we got a new one... for free... >>

I forgot to ask what kind of router it is, but yeah if it's a D-Link I can understand. Their cheap and have more problems then say a Linksys, in my experience anyway.

Same here. I try to avoid D-Link where possible.
