After completing worms3d in about a day i need a game that will entertain me in both single and multiplayer modes. I have morrowind which is a great game and very immersive but not really my style of game. I think i should wait for deus ex2 but if anyone has any ideas for a game i can get my teeth into post your comments here.
please no "yeh UT2k3 is teh r0x0rs".. i want a game with a plot. for the benefit of those who have grown up with playstations...

Id say if you havent tried WC3 its got a great single player story and an enertaining multiplayer mode.

I have been considering renewing my DAOC account but I do not want to be sucked back into a game like that.

I have heard good things from Rise of Nations, Call of Duty, Freedom Fighters, and Halo also.

Warcraft, Halo, Starcraft, America's Army (fps - no story - play it for free at americasarmy.com - great game)

and uh, well, that's all I have

Top recommendations?

1. Chrono Trigger is possibly the greatest RPG of all-time. Grab a SNES emulator and track down the ROM. If you can't track down the ROM, e-mail me and I'll create an account for you on my personal FTP and post the file in a personal folder.

2. Starcraft. I have lost count of the number of people who've told me that they used cheat codes just to get ahead and find out what happens next in the story. Cool stuff.

3. Final Fantasy 6 was better known as Final Fantasy 3 in the US. This is a must-play for any RPG fan--a standard by which all RPGs after were measured.

4. Warcraft III is not as cool as Starcraft, but still good single-player chewiness. If you have your pick, pick Starcraft. If you can't get Starcraft, try harder. If you still can't get Starcraft, you're not trying hard enough. But if you're determined not to get Starcraft, get Warcraft III.

5. Unreal doesn't have a very intensive story, but the story is there and the world is immersive. This is possibly one of the greatest first-person shooters ever and a wonderful departure from the gloom, doom, and icky bloody gory crap that is the trademark of all id games (and this comes from a Doom fan).

You might also try to pick up some bargain bin classics like Shogo for the PC or Final Fantasy VII for the Playstation.

Hrm. Did anyone else notice that both the RPGs in my list of five were old SNES games? What does this say about computer RPGs in general? *scratches chin sagely*

bah i completed morrowind.. 100 hours play my fat backside...

ive compelted wc3 and most of the other games you mentioned.. call of duty sounds good but i think i will wait and see what the new year has to offer first...

ROFL yeh you gotta try until you drop to get StarCraft. Best RTS game ever made by Blizzard.

I haphazardly left out my nice list of RPG's you should try...a few mentioned already by others:

Final Fantasy 4 (2 in the U.S.) - battles are rough but overall good storyline
Final Fantasy 5 - pales in comparison to 6, but good nonetheless
Final Fantasy 6 (3 in the U.S.) - awesome storyline
Final Fantasy 7 - after playing 6, is now the second best RPG in the Final Fantasy Series
Final Fantasy 8 - pretty slow until the last couple disks, but still great. Just don't get sucked into the card game >_<
Final Fantasy X - stinkin' awesome.
Chrono Trigger - arguably the best RPG of all time
Chrono Cross - not as good as Chrono Trigger in my opinion, but still ranks up there as a great game
The Legend of Dragoon - great fighting system, excellent storyling; often underrated
Tales of Phantasia - you most certainly need to find a translation of this game. Now.
Terranigma - British game, so you might have played it already. Interesting use of Mode7 graphics, decent storyline.
Lufia - this and it's sequel (Fortress of Doom) are both great games

I've never played any of the Breath of Fire/Secret of Evermore/Mana games, but they are probably worth a look for hardcore RPGers.

lol good ideas guys.. im not really after another rpg.. i really dont have the patience for one. i guess im just a moron..lol.

If only more games would be non-linear.. i have always had an idea for a game engine but i guess noone else could code it.. i coded it on a very simple level in one of my games i made in fortran fo all things..lol

*tech bit*
It basically gave each variable a corrisponding matrix with set values in. Depending on what choices you made in the game the variables are reset.. Making the path of the game unique based on your actions (seen to a small extent in deus ex).. but heres the clinch.. I found a routine that puts flags of time from the system clock when you perform an action. this can be used to create a random seed to generate a totally random set of events or variables. this would almost never be the same unless you performed a certain (and unkown) task in the /exact/ same time. The time random variables would alter another matrix which would determine other factros in the game..

Put something like that into a game the size ans scope of an rpg like morrowind then you would have a completely unique and emmersive environment every time you loaded the game up. No two times you play it would be the same.. but of course it would be an absolute pigdog to code...

*end tech bit*

if anyone plans on stealing my idea... please send funds to me...lol

oh and the game i made was a small fighting game based on pokemon called churchemon where i gave all of our youth group special powers..lol. The random seed was used to give you a random opponent, setting and for the dice rolls when you attack..since any random number generator is not random unless you seed it properly..

I guess they sorta try that with DAoC and Everquest...but it seems to me that in every game like that (DAoC, Everquest, Baldur's Gate, Planetside, FFXI, etc.) developers rely on individual people providing the "completely unique and emmersive environment". It would be absolutely amazing if they could replicate that for single player, I agree.

Looks like Square, Sony, and the rest of 'em will have to start hiring some pigdog wranglers

I'ma smack Tek for downing WIII.......I'm mad at blizzard for not bringing out SC2. I lost much love for Starcraft after about 1.08 patch came out. The game gets a bit redudant after a bit.

I like Warcraft III because it has elements of RPG and RTS, though mostly RTS. I also like the graphics, because they make Starcraft look like something my dog ACCIDENTLY ate then forceful vomited back up. I want 3d SC. Then I'll be happy.

Warcraftiii has been my obsession as of late, I just love the story line....particularly this past patch, 1.13. They added two acts into the Orc campaign. Mmm, good story mmm.

Anyways, yea.

Starcraft is good, Warcraft is Good, Diablo II/ Lord of Destruction is good, Mario Kart (SNES/n64. I'm not all that impressed with the GC version :[), Any of the Final Fantasy series, save IX. I want to hit Square for making Zidane. Ugly bugger. Anywho, that's just my opinion. *casts hex on Tek. Tek walks off as a crab* eat it, boy.
