Osk no longer a tankadin

Osk just is not able to grab aggro like he used to. I am surprised by this, because in theory it should have been easier. I finally figured out what hamstringed Osk's ability to tank before . . . it was vengence. That talent was crucial in my pre-1.9 build to get and hold aggro, as it increased both melee and holy damage. However, it is now so far up the retribution tree, there is no way I can make a build similar to pre-1.9 that has the aggro-getting ability Osk once had.

Oh well, so Osk now joins the ranks of retnoobs with a 21/0/30 build. I guess if I want to tank I will need to level up Grimgear or Azolas :)

Wow, another fallen pally. I can't believe Blizzard has forced us all to become plate/cloth healers as our primary role.

I would have to say that 1.9 ranks pretty low on a lot of people's lists as a successful patch...don't get me started on the slew of technical problems I've noticed...

Was in ZG yesterday with my mage, and when I /inspected our main tank he was only wearing his shoulder armor...yet he said he had everything on....

Silly pally! Aggro is for warriors!

I am so glad they did not pigeonhole us into a certain role (sacrasm on). They took away our tanking, promised but did not deliver a dps buff compared to the nerfs, and buffed our healing.

If I had one pally that would be the build I would go with.

My retnoob is 5 11 35 and my healadin in 31 20 0.

My retnoob has more melee toughness than your build and my healadin has an extra 5% spell crit rate, and both of my builds have kings. I find repentance and holy shock to be of limited usage but I am still learning how to use them ;(

Osk - can you share with our pallys which talents you chose and why?

Kevin

I will give a breakdown of my talents later, don't feel like typing them all out :) However, the two main talents I went for are vengence and consecration. I also have improved holy light to increase healing, as I think Osk's main role will be moderate damage with back-up healing.

And speaking of moderate damge -

Oh yeah, Judgement of Command crit with my new build only costing 72 mana to cast! woot!

Okay, I *may* have to take it back. Specing as a typical retnoob, I found I was able to dish out the holy damage (surprise, surprise). So, spending much more gold than I should I tested a couple new builds and I think I have a build that almost makes Osk a paladin tank again. Here is it:

>Protection - 21pts
Redoubt - 5pts
Precision - 3pts
Toughness - 2pts
Blessing of Kings - 1pt
Improved Righteous Fury - 3pts
Sheild Specialization - 3pts
Improved Hammer of Justice - 3pts
Blessing of Sanctuary - 1pt

>Retribution - 30pts
Benediction - 5pts
Deflection - 5pts
Improved Seal of the Crusader - 3pts
Improved Judgement - 2pts
Conviction - 5pts
Seal of Command - 1pt
Pursuit of Justice - 2pts
Eye for an Eye - 1pt
Sanctity Aura - 1pt
Vengence - 5pts

Now a little explanation.

First, I chose Pursuit of Justice because if any of you paladins have ever PvP'd, an increase in foot speed is very nice. True, there is an enchant, but I would rather have +Stam or +agility on my boots. However, I could have easily chosen Vindication, but I am not sure if it has any real value in PvE, maybe some small value in PvP.

Now, to the meat of the matter. I am finding the Judgement of Command is very useful. I use it alot. Because of Benediction, it is only 76 mana to cast. I find this negligible with the potential damage it can do (see below).

So, I have made my build focused on increasing holy damage output. Thus Sanctity Aura and improved Seal of the Crusader, which gives a nice boost to holy damage with judgement of the crusader, increases damage output greatly. What does this mean? If you chose this type of build, you will actually have to click buttons like every other class :D Playing this build, I felt like I was dishing it out quite well, both with 1h and 2h. Do I have DPS numbers . . . no, right now I don't have a DPS addon loaded. However, I have pictures! (or at least one picture)

My newest crit record for Judgement of Command, finally broke 1k!

Okay, why all this focus on damage? I bet you are wondering where the tanking comes in. Tanking is about getting and holding aggro. 1.9 made it so that the only real way a paladin can do this is through holy damage. Seal of Righteousness used to develop hate based on both weapon damage and holy damage. Now it is just holy. Holy Shield is holy damage, but it is passive. You have to have the attention of the target first for it to proc. One of the frustrating things I felt with a heavy protection build is that I would hit Holy Shield just as I lost aggro. Wasted mana, no paladin tanking. I did the 1069 crit with 1h + shield. Non stunned judgements crit for around ~500, still respectable for paladin damage (shush other classes!)

So there are three key combo's in my new build -

Improved Righteous Fury + Vengence: This gives my the added hate generation through the self buff while increasing my holy damage with talents up to and including Vengence, high in the retribution tree.

Improved Hammer of Justice + Improved Judgement: To maximize damage from Judgement of Command, the target has to be stunned. Lowered cooldowns on both of these abilites increases my ability to dish out judgements. This will not work on all bosses, but the boost in damage works off rogue stuns as well. Some bosses can be rogue-stunned (like kidney punch).

Sanctity Aura + Judgement of Improved Seal of the Crusader: Each of these gives a 10% and 15% boost in holy damage respectively. No small potatoes. With Blessing of Might and Seal of the Crusader, my attack power is 1200+. A nice way to open up combat :) That is not including any other buffs other than paladin buffs. (Mind you, Osk is heavy on strength, 292 atm)

One thing I noticed before I came to this latest build, Osk seemed to be missing alot more. So I decided to add in Precision. 3% to hit may not seem like much, but I certainly can tell the difference.

Any thoughts or opinions are more than welcomed.

This is the build I am likely to move to as well, it returns me to my original roots for which my gear is targetted. As a side note, I concur with Precision, I had it up to the 1.9 and found it very useful. Thanks for sharing that info!

To bad you can put any more points into Holy. I am finding Holy Shock with Righteous fury to be a somewhat effective single target instant taunt. I can pull mobs of our squishy a lot faster now instead of having to waste HoJ or hit them several times to get their attention.
