Patriotism

Good call on the use of it as a weapon to control people.

Cheers. :) I think I spent to long reading Weber and the other fellow who's name escapes me in Sociology 101 many moons ago. I remember George Kelly once saying that [heavily paraphrased] " when someone says that their friends are [unpatriotic, unmotivated, lacking in faith], it often says more about the person than anytihng about their friends".

For the interested reader on how the way we define words reflects who we are as a person see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_construct_psychology

If one cannot define it, how can it be used as a weapon? In fact, how can one use the word if there is not a universally accepted definition of what patriotism is.

Just because you cannot see something does not make it any less deadly. Blindly following what you believe to be true allows people to use you very easily. If a crowd is rallied up about something it only takes a small spark to drive them into a raging mob, throw a few weapons into the mix and you can have a surge of confidence to take on even the police or military.
