Plot points

I just did that quest, Beyond the Wall or whatever, where you scout out the Charr Invasion army to the north of the great wall, and now I'm in Fort Ranik and the North Wall has fallen. I didn't complete all the quests in Old Ascalon before hand though. Are those quests "gone" now? I didn't get any armor either.

Are there any other major plont points/quests that I should be aware of that move the story forward and block off parts of the game world or quests?

You can always go back and do those quests. They don't go away.

The only "point of no return" in the entire game is the quest that leads to the "searing." Every other quest can be redone at will.
