power gaming

Just curious, how many of you are power gamers vs. casual gamers.

I'm more casual now.

When I was playing Everquest, I was in one of the 2 top guilds in the game. an item in WoW is named after our guild leader and the guild leader from the other top guild. Tigole and Forer's strawberry ice cream or something like that. Tigole was our guild leader (Legacy of Steel) and Furor was the guild leader of Fires of Heaven (no, it wasn't a Christian guild). FoH went down in flames when they were caught exploiting a bug in a high level dungeon and many of their highest characters accounts were banned.

I used to play Magic: the Gathering professionally. I was at one time ranked 38 in the world and played on the first two pro tours.

I quit that because my wife and I had a daughter and I didn't want to be out of town so much. Even though it was nice to make lots of money playing cards.

Now, i'm kind of in between I guess but tend more towards casual gaming. Many of you know that the guild member Hylander is my daughter and I let her make the Death Knight on my account, she named him Unchained.

While the guild falls along quite a spectrum ... we have more serious casual players and we have "power players" with families and lives ... of the 200+ accounts in the guild, I would say probabably 20-30 are on most nights of the week, raid more than once a week folks ... another 20-30 are multiple times a week but not always at consistent times and aren't often raiders. Probably double that number are "active" and then there are probably 40-60 accounts of folks who aren't on too regularly. That's just my guess, other guildies probably have better perspective on the mix. We have players who definitely rank among the best on the server but who have made the choice to either make their gaming time more of a service endeavor by helping others be better players in a Christian, family-friendly environment rather than just advancing themselves, or who just don't want the life-consuming routine of a hardcore raiding guild.

MANY MANY of our guildies have gone through the same transition as you with families and children ... and one of the things that's pretty deep in our raiding philosophy is to try to strike the balance between progressing through raid content but also to give more casual players opportunities to raid ... while keeping a Christian tone and atmosphere to all we do. It's often easier to aspire to that than accomplish all that, but overall our raid leaders do a pretty great job at it.

Seriously, you were in a guild with Tigole? He's the lead game designer for WoW. And professional gaming? Impressive stuff!

I'm more of a power gamer but I love the casual atmosphere of Redeemed. I love the idea we can fool around and poke genuine caring fun at guild members like Galatians and hunters, get serious at a raid, do a whacky guild event like the christmas gift exchange and take a few days of the game without people feeling alienated or looking to get back at you by witholding in game opportunities from you.

I was in a couple guilds with Tigole. We both started playing Everquest about the same time. I actually think he may have started a couple months after me.

I started out with him in a guild called Sanctuary then moved on to Legacy of Steel.

His original name was Bigole but his last name (in EQ you get to choose a last name at level 20) referred to a female body part and he ended up getting reported and they changed it. basically switched the first letter of each name.

Can't wait to hit 80 and do some raiding here.
