Progress?

I have had some random thoughts on "progress"....that I will be posting after I get your take on the following scenario...

A little boy takes a spelling test, misses eight words. His grade is a 38%...do you think that represents progress or failure?

----->I know you are probably shaking your head - answer the best you can with what I have provided you....more to come later!

I guess it would depend on whether or not the words he got right were words he had problems with previously.

Also it would depend on the child ... for instance.... does that child have a hard time with memorization... phonetics,... etc.

progress has been on my mind a lot lately...sometimes it is hard to see progress (even if it is in a tiny amount), just because you still have yet to break all the way through....with that being said - the little boy who got a 38% on his spelling test showed great progress....sadly, his teacher couldn't see that. His highest grade prior to this one was a 7% - the week he got a 38% was the week that we tried something new - 30% jump...I was amazed and so totally proud of him...we have finally found something he can understand - something that has helped his grades - sign language.

the only thing the teacher saw was an F....which was really sad to me - but I suppose "its hard to see the big picture when you're inside the frame."

This same little boy has no bed to sleep in, he comes to school hungry, he is caught in the middle of a custody battle and isn't meeting the requirements to be promoted to second grade. He is the sweetest little boy, he has become one of my 'heart' children...those children that just grab my heart...I wish there was something more I could do for him...five hours a week is all I get to spend with him...but he helps put a lot of things in perspective. He reminds me how blessed I truly am....how blessed I am that he is part of my life.

Anyways- just felt like sharing the story....

That is rather sad. I am very happy and pleased to hear that you have found a better way for him to learn.

Caution Opinion ahead Caution

THis is me talking. Not trying to bash the schools or anything.... Well maybe I am....

I have a problem with public and private schools. I even have a problem with my school.
Most teachers in public schools do not get paid much at all. That being said, they do not really look out for the welfare of the children they teach. It is true, A lot of teachers only see the grade, not the child.
I have a few college proffs that have been that way.

On the flip side, There are those teachers who really try to get their students to excel. I have a few Proffs who want that.

Anyway, this is one of the big reasons I am pro Home schooling. Who better to teach a child than the mother or father? (I was lucky and had both teaching me) Who is going to know their child better? I highly doubt that any school teacher or college proffesor knows his or her students very well at all.

Well thats my $2 worth. Agree or disagree with me if you like, I'll love ya anyway. :D

I completly agree....teachers don't see much more than the grade and that is really sad because there are so many services that this particular little boy could benefit from.... but since she won't be doing much, I do what I can - I might bring him some crackers one day or something small - as I work with him from 9-10 everyday and his class doesn't eat lunch until 1:30 - and that's a long time to go on last nights dinner...

I agree with you shy. I think for a childs mind to work properly and learn they also need to have a good meal. Food has a big impact on people's minds and thought process. Just think about it. If you are constantly putting caffeine and sugary foods into your body then you will get tired and your mind is not clear. However, if you fill yourself on more natural foods and things that will give your body energy naturally then your thought process is a lot clearer. I know from experience.

Also about the homeschool issue..... since I homeschool my kids I am pro homeschool but I agree with eskimo that some teachers do have good intentions but they unfortunately are not free to cater to the individual student since they usually have about 30 kids in their class that they are having to work with.

I think that is awesome that sign language has opened up that door for that little one. I pray though that the teachers eyes will be opened at the progress he is making. I think you being there for that precious little boy is also helping to make a difference for him too. He sees someone that cares for him and wants him to succeed and will try harder. You are definitly in your "calling". :)
