Quake 4 getting an overhaul

Quake 4's upcoming 1.3 release brings some major changes, which I think is a very good thing. Nobody is playing this game except people who are interested in competing in the CPL, and it's sad when a desire to compete at a game is fueled by a desire for competitive gaming in general instead of a desire to play the game in particular.

Quake 3 has more players than Quake 4. Quake World (i.e., Quake 1) even has more players than Quake 4.

Why? Well, I won't claim to know exactly why, but I have some very strong suspicions.

  • It's very hardware intensive
  • The physics take elements from Q2 and Q3 physics, but don't do either one as solidly
  • Weapon balance does not match Q3's perfection (railgun/nailgun/lightning are all overpowered, hyperblaster is underpowered, machine gun zoom "feature" is practically worthless)
  • The maps that shipped with the game were not very good due to lack of consideration that people in Quake actually like to strafe-jump.
  • People just don't like deathmatch games anymore (I shed many tears over this one)
  • Crouch-sliding is really just bizarre and inconsistent, trickjumps require more luck than anything else

But it looks like this new 1.3 patch just might fix Q4 multiplayer. They're toning down the graphical-slowdown-fest that is Doom3 engine lighting, tweaking movement physics, adding a new weapon (not specified) and rebalancing the ones they have, and adding a bunch of features for the competitive side of the game since the DM community's prospects for a replacement competition game are pretty much 0% until UT2007 comes out next year. They're adding an entirely new gametype (again unspecified), as well as some new maps for the existing ones (CTF and DM).

Id Software's official article on it is on their front page. I'm pretty hopeful that this will give me more bang for my $50. Sure, the single player was pretty good (better, gameplay-wise, than HL2, though HL2 is the clear winner in storyline), but I've gotten over a thousand hours of gameplay out of UT2004, and at least a hundred out of Quake 3. I should at least get 30 or 40 out of Quake 4!

Im still debating to buy this game, i have picked it up off the shelf 5 times and was tempted to buy it...

I liked it, but I like any id game...I'd advise you to stay away from it if you don't like blood and gore.

Well, that's true. But I bought it for the multiplayer. You can skip cinematics in single-player, but on the other hand that particular sequence is rendered live.

I wonder if those console commands affect that sequence? I dunno...

Basically, if you're looking at it for the single player campaign, then if you thought that Doom3 looked fun but had too many satanist overtones, then Quake 4 is for you, because it has lots of intense space marine combat with none of the pentagrams or demons.

Multiplayer, on the other hand, is more like Quake 2 + Quake 3. It's a fast, arcade-style shooter. Expect things more along the line of

"Yes! I nailed that guy with a rocket in midair and grabbed the quad damage and did a time-saving trickjump to the red armor coming up in 10 seconds!"

and not

"Yes! I sucessfully sat behind these boxes for half the round doing nothing and then walked out and used my inaccurate SMG to spray these two dudes trying to plant the bomb!"

I played doom3, but it got old very fast, it played great in linux, and loaded alot faster then in windozzz(reiser > ntfs lololol)

ya the multi in doom3 was along the lines of camp the shadow, kill the idiot who comes along, rinse and repeat

If you're at Best Buy or EB Games and you see Quake 4 on the shelf and you're about to buy it... STOP!

The best thing you can do is go eBay. I got Q4 for 5 bucks - including shipping (99 cents to win, and 3.99 for shipping). If you make sure to stick with guys that sell a lot of games and have a good rating with over 100 sales, you're perfectly fine.

Another thing I was trying to do was buy a lot of used games such as Q4, Doom 3, F.E.A.R., or Battlefield 2. Unfortunately, I couldn't seem to find one with the right games for me, nor one with the right price. Heh, I'm cheap.

Hope some of this helped. :-D
