I would like to get a laptop..but im not sure whether to get a mobile processor or not...if i dont, then i have 2 or so hours of battery life..(bad for wardriving..or if im at a ywam base or at a conference typing up stuff and there isnt battery power near..hmm i wonder if theres a way i could power down the processor)..or..if i get a mobile processor..i might have 10 hours or battery life? maybe? but not as much power..1.5 ghz max..less ram..smaller hard drive..bad for video editing../sound editing/gaming/etc..what are your thoughts?..any brands you recommend? (I'm not rich either..closer to the opposite)

I lug my desktop PC around and call it a laptop... It doesnt have battery loife It has to be plugged in... But its very powerful and can blow almost any laptop away

i use a toshiba satalite, never had any problems with it. i know Dell/ HP and Acer all have bad ram problems degrading and they will need to be replaced soon. (friends here in the dorm). it does come down alot to the user too and what you want it for, and how you are going to use it.

heh, so did i.

Yeah, I was actually looking at the toshiba satellite .a70 awhile back. I want to play less games..this laptop would mostly be for web design/sound editing/email/internet/etc.

Whre cant you take a desktop PC? If where your going doesnt have electricity just carry alone a power generator sure they are huge and noisey but they work! And if your like on an airplane and soemone is bragging about their puny little laptop you can whip out your monster PC that sounds like a racecar and blow em away!!!

BWUAHAHAHAHA

I would recommend the recent toshiba satellites.. theyre cheap and pretty reliable if you get rid of all the corporate-bulk-buy pc fluff.. Either that or config up a dell when theres a special offer on.. which is every other week.

well for the editing that you are talking about esh gasp but i recommend a MAC. MAC's have always been good for editing, over a PC. most people who do any editing what-so-ever i know use MAC. and OS X or 10 i forget. isnt that bad, MACs have come along away and are pretty nice.

Noo...I typed a long post but I wasn't logged in so I lost everything...grr.

Yeah, I don't think I will buy a dell..just because stuff I've heard..and I just don't like the company much. Im also nervous about buying a mobile processor because they are the same price as faster ones..and will probably be obsolete in a year or so?

I do need the battery power though..I need a laptop at church when im doing sound to record it, for video things, at school for typing and gaming and etc ;) and when im driving. (Just checking for open access points..honest..

)

I do know a few people who use macs for editing and stuff...im just not ready to make the switch yet..thanks for the suggestion though.

Rizz: Which toshiba models are talking about? What do you mean by "corporate-bulk-buy pc fluff"?

like all the programs that come pre-installed mostly like aol and all that junk i uninstalled everything except my OS, MS works, and my statilite runs just fine.

I own a Gateway 200x, with the "big" battery it gets 4 hours of life, with the small one, only around 2. It weighs about 3-4lbs, and is less than an inch thick. I would suggest you go for something that weighs a little more and does have the Centrino technology. As for your concern about mobile processors, I benchmarked my Pentium M 1.5 against my P4 2.4ghz, and they came out about dead even. Clock cycles are not the end of the world

.

Apples do get very nice battery life as well. If you're doing sound work you might consider an apple. Apples are also very good wardiving machines.

Oh really? Yeah I was wondering about how well Mobile processors match up with desktops.. hmm.

Yeah, I always uninstall junk like aol, etc..I would probably do a clean install.

Is toshiba support any good? What about warranty? I think the only dealer around here that carries them is Future Shop..but their warranties suck so much..I will have the check out the london drugs and the new Best Buy that opened 30 min away from me

my toshiba had a 1 yr warrenty that is all iwanted on it, never had any problems, infact after a year was up i was messing around with my services disabling alot to stream-line the cpu, fastest start up ect, and some how did something to make it go bonkers and they still helped me fix the problem ( no restore point boy was i dumb ^_^ ).

Yeah stay away from Celerons they are much weaker then they say they are because they are lacking as side mathimatical processor... So... If your going intel then get pentium if they make that for laptops, just avoid Celeron.

I found out that my laptop does this, i'm not sure about the rest, make sure to do research on the laptop graphics.  My laptops run a geforce fx go5700 (64mb dedicated) and on battery power the graphics card cuts it own power in half to conserve battery power (of course my laptop gets an hour tops battery power

.  With a 325mhz core clock (i think) and a 600mhz memory clock on AC power. It kickes down to 300mhz memory clock on battery power.  I tested it too, played flight sim 2004 on AC power and get 30fps, on battery with exact same graphics settings, 15fps on battery power.  I dont know if its just my laptop or geforce.  I was able to find out online that my graphics card did that before i bought it.
