what are the go to sites for addons, or ones to avoid. right now i plan on playing on my mac, but the desktop will come into play probably during the winter so auto update software would be nice for mac or windows.

What John said. There are others like wowace.com which is the development for many of the mods but distribution is commonly done through Curse and Wowinterface. Oh check out spartanui on wowinterface, it has been picked up again and it rocks!
