Spyware in Trillian?

Also forget about Trillian, I have a strong suspicion that is has ties with adware companies. If your using the latest version of basic, right click on a underlined work in the text and click 'Search the Web'. This will launch a browser window and search using 'Mysearch.com' which is known for spyware/adware/toolbars/etc.

I recently moved to Miranda IM. I've used it before and didn't like it, but that was an early version. So far so good and it works with Google Talk. The download is like 250kb and on my system it takes up ~1mb of memory.

Another thing about trillian is that it updates the user list everytime you login. So if you delete someone from your list, after closing and reopening, their right back in your list. There is a check box in Miranda that stops that.

I just wish they could have come up with a better name...

*edit*: According to Spyware Guide (and spywareinfo) My Search is just a toolbar made by Ask Jeeves. Check it out here.

I have the latest trillian as well, and underlined words are for me, links to a wikipedia listing for that word. I place my mouseover them, and the wikipedia entry appears.

I bet you ahve the mywebsearch spyware present on your system which invades everything.
Don't jump to conclusions, William. =P We all have the Wikipedia function in Trillian turned on. It's a great feature, really.

Heh, not all of us. I disabled the feature immediately after installing Trillian Pro 3. I personally think it's obnoxious.

lol.

yeah, but you missed my point. Right click on the word and click Search the Web. It uses "My Search" which is spyware. I only used the feature once and it never did bother me that the words were underlined. That was before I threw it in the recycle-bin.

Another reason to ditch trillian and another reason to use xfire: here.

I believe one is in the works for MIM (Miranda IM).

The beauty of open source projects.

So add me: theapoc ;P

Problem with Xfire = no non gamers use it so what about all my friends ?
underline words are fun to look at when your bored!!

Underlined words for me too, I don't click just mouse over. X-Fire makes me mad because it is always connecting and reconnecting.

The point of this plugin is to combine all your non-gamer friends and your gamer friends into one applet, gaim. That way you don't have to get your friends to move to xfire or have two im's open all the time. Heres a pic...

You can get gaim here.
The plugin here.

The wikipedia function is NOT spyware and is NOT powered by mywebsearch. if you are getting redirected to mywebsearch your system is infested by spyware..not because trillian has it. Also i can tell you that if ben endleman or spywareinfo or any other reputable anti-spyware site does not have anything regarding trillian containing spyware..it simply doesn't have it.

Again, My websearch is not form trillian. wikipedia functionality is not spyware. Wikipedia is not powered by mywebsearch. There are not credible reports of trillian containing spyware on the web.(please note the word credible). If trillian contained spyware cerulean studios would go bankrupt immediatly. Run a spyware scan on your computer to get rid of hte mywebsearch.

I'll have to check into this when I reboot into windows. I ran ad-aware and spybot regularly and had spybot to auto update and auto scan frequently. I don't believe I had any spyware and I never noticed a mywebsearch bar.

Everyone one goes through problems like that. In DoD I was having tons of texture issues, but changing drivers solved that. Lastnight I was trying to watch Sin City and it wouldn't play, but then I could play Project 86's making of DVD just fine. Turns out I was missing a certain 'plugin' (for lack of better description) and once it was installed it worked fine. The newer DVDs have errors on them to make duplication slower/not work for some DVD burners. It's come along way. I have used linux off and on since I was 13. The though of playing a game more advanced then tux racer was more like a dream.

There is a huge network of support out there for linux too. Forums, IRC, etc. If you connect to irc.freenode.net and type in /j # < the name of any open source project, ie gaim> im sure it will be there with some people to try and help.

If you use Firefox the bar won't show up. It will show up in IE however.
