Tebran's Computer Wiped

Bowser

Tribe of Judah StarCraft Series Chapter Leader
My OS wiped the other day when I went to reformat the computer, but unfortunately the reformat process never finished.

I won't be back on WoW until I can get the OS back up, all the drivers installed, and the patch downloaded, which I'm guessing will take about a week.

For several reasons the Restore disc isn't loading correctly, and neither are the other OS cd's I have (between my roommate and I, and our 5 computers, we have 4 restoral / OS cd's, and NONE of them will work).

woops wrong post.

Create a boot floppy disk with fdisk and go in and manually delete the partition like Hes said, try again from scratch after that. I've also had a problem where my CD drive wouldn't boot off any disks and I had to make the microsoft floppy disks to start the process, information on that can be found here.

Sounds like to me that your CD ROM might be causing your problems, if you have tryed different CDs itself, try using a different player, if you have 5 different compuuters in your place, you can take one out and just connect it up to your main computer and then start the install from there, if that doesn't do the trick, I am afraid that there might be a problem on your motherborad. I had this kind of problem a few months ago when I was helping a company do some system restores, all system went through just fine but one, I tried different CDs and different CD ROMS, also different RAM nothing would let the new OS install, so it had to be the motherboard.

These are just a few things for you to try. Good Luck Bowser and hope to see you back in the game soon

Here's an update on the problems I'm having. Thanks for your help btw guys.

On some of the CD's I load, the HD will succesfull repartition, but the problems occur when Windows starts to install. It's usually something along the lines of not finding a particular file, and the troubleshoot will say that the disc is dirty and needs to be cleaned. This problem, which occurs on two(?) discs could be attributed to the CD drive itself, or possibly maybe even the HD? (can someone clarify?)
The other problem is that the only "succesful" install comes from my dad's eMachines Restoral cd for his laptop. The drive will repartition, Windows will install all the way to the confirmation.. but apparently the drivers on the cd are interfering with the default drivers for the hardware, and caused my keyboard not to work correctly. So.. I can't type in the Product Key. I've even tried using another keyboard.. same problem; it's obviously a conflict with the mobo drivers.

My choices are, as I see it, to clean the cd drive, and order a replacement cd for my machine, which I've already done.

Anyway, just wanted to post a heads-up.

When i built my newest computer i went and bought a copy of Windows 2000 Pro. The first CD did exactly that, corrupted a file and the installation process halted. I took the old CD back and they gave me a new one. Make sure you do a REAL format of the HD before you reinstall anything. (The real format is the long one, takes about an hour or 2 but its worth it.) And try not to have a partition on the drive... ive noticed that just messes up everything sometimes.

Try a different CD rom drive, you don't have to mount it into the computer, just unplug the cables, IE power and data cable and then put them on the other CD ROM drive and try the reinstall again, and don't do a QUICK format do the full one, it takes longer but it is worth it

Ok, I'm using a different cd drive now. I still had the same error on the first disc, and now I'm trying one of the other copies we have. If this doesn't work, then I'll probably just have to call it quits until I get the one I ordered in the mail.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone.

Hey Tebran, are you going to have your computer up and running for your scheduled MC run this Wednesday?

I'm not 100% certain :(. It all depends on if I get the disc in the mail soon or not.

btw - the other disc didn't work either.

Doesn't sound like its a CD disc issue, so its unlikely a new CD will work. If a new CD Drive isn't working, then you are down to Hard drive or MOBO. The only really easy way to find out is to replace the HDD and try again. If it still doesn't work, its the MOBO.

Its more than likely that the HD is bad. If the mobo is messed up then it wont run until windows is trying to run on its own, rather than messing up during the actual installation.

I just had to replace a 160Gb HDD that had video and digital pictures on it. Now idea what happened, maybe the heads crashed into the disc, maybe something fried in the controller. I couldn't run a surface scan on it if my life depended on it to try and recover 90+Gigabytes of memories, and my life depended on it. HDD errors have wierd was to manifest themselves, its most likely a HDD error, it makes the most sense.

I finally figured out the problem and am working on fixing it..

Luckily, it had nothing to do with the HD, or any other hardware for that matter.

Wish me luck as I tryto find a permanent solution!

Grrr, "three to five business days" my rear-end! That stupid disc hasn't arrived in the mail for over 9 days.

I do have Windows temporarily installed, but until I get the new restoral cd I won't be able to do anything on this computer.

If you lived in Nigeria, it would have been 3 - 5 business days. Seems overseas Fedex is more effecient then local service.
