That Awesome Moment...

...when things finally come together. A friend of mine gave me some of his leftover computer parts from the machine he built a few years ago. It wasn't a complete machine, so I bought the parts I thought I needed.

Unfortunately, things didn't just work like I wanted them to. I was thick in the middle of school trouble at the time, so after wasting a few hours over a couple of days, the project got shelved until I could devote time and mental energy to figuring out what to do.

Tonight, I decided to finally see what I could get done.

Through the mighty powers of systematic troubleshooting, I managed to get the machine wholly up and running.

...well, I mean, there are a few things that I need to iron out (like getting the HDD indicator light plugged in)... but I have Windows 7 Pro freshly installed and the machine is doing what it's supposed to.

I'm stoked. On the one hand, I'm happy about my triumph. On the other, I'm so excited to finally play the games that were just barely out of reach on my old computer (including TF2 on Tuesday nights... Champions Online... and, teehee!, Starcraft II... not to mention DOWII... which I bought a year ago and have been unable to play since).

For the curious, my old machine was...
P4 2.8GHz, 1GB RAM, Nvidia 6600GT (AGP).
New machine is...
Ath 64x2 2.0GHz, 2GB RAM (got a third gig sittin' here, but it was givin' me grief during Windows install for some reason), and Nvidia 8600GT (PCIe).

No... it's not an amazing machine. Still, it's all the difference I needed to play the games I really wanted to play but just couldn't quite pull off. I'm thrilled. So. Very. Thrilled.

Maybe now Steam will actually serve a purpose for me! XD

"New" comps are always a thrill, especially when ya done did the work yerself. Used to resurrect old comps and update them for give away, and it was always a fun project.

It's awesome. For sure. :D

And I'm now totally up and runnin'. Just gotta install that last RAM chip now that I've completed the system install on my main hard drive. Eeeeek.

Time to get my apps and games installed again. XD

Awesome we will have to do some DOW2 battles sometime. :) Maybe some SC2, but I am still working through the main campaign...LOL

I can now run SCII... but I can't exactly play it due to... y'know... not having the money to buy it. >.>

I feel your pain T_T but hey you've got TF2 working so that's like 90% of all the games you need right there :D .

Neat! Hate to spoil your fun however but I don't think this will handle sc2 very well. A minor say hundred bux upgrade on the other hand...

Hmm maybe everything on low at a lower resolution... I'm interested, post results XD
That additional ram should help, but not sure how that CPU is gona hold out against some... more crazy custom games.

Huzzah!

Hope to see you in TF2 and Champions Online (and other games you own) soon, sir!

Been playin' a bit of CO. It's a blast! Gonna give TF2 a go today. Depending on company (got relatives comin' over for dinner), I may even be able to make it to TF2sday! Woo!

DoWII is what I'm possibly most excited about. :D

@Silverleaf: Why you rainin'? :P I have little aversion to playing on low graphic settings, so we'll see how things go once... y'know... I finally get to a point when I can try those crazy custom games. :)

heh it should RUN starcraft 2 that's a given but check anyway.

Just don't want you to drop the $$ only to find you can't run it to expectations.

PC Starcraft 2 Minimum System Requirements

* Windows® XP/Windows Vista®/Windows® 7 (Updated with the latest Service Packs) with DirectX® 9.0c
* 2.6 GHz Pentium® IV or equivalent AMD Athlon® processor
* 128 MB PCIe NVIDIA® GeForce® 6600 GT or ATI Radeon® 9800 PRO video card or better
* 12 GB available HD space
* 1 GB RAM (1.5 GB required for Windows Vista®/Windows® 7 users)
* DVD-ROM drive
* Broadband Internet connection
* 1024X720 minimum display resolution

PC Starcraft 2 Recommended System Requirements:

* Windows Vista®/Windows® 7
* Dual Core 2.4Ghz Processor
* 2 GB RAM
* 512 MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8800 GTX or ATI Radeon® HD 3870 or better

It *shuld* run singleplayer on a lower res and normal multi maps, but that's just a hunch. It's def below or at recommended, and mind you recommended won't work for ultra.

well you may wanna try the demo or something, or get discs from a friend, you can buy your own account when you confirm it's working.
