I know every year when Christmas rolls around people always encourage me to “remember the reason for the season.” I think that’s a good thing, but I always sort of grimace when I hear that. I don’t want to remember the reason for the season—I want to remember the reason that I wake up each morning, the reason that I am able to take each breath, the reason that my heart continues to beat, and the reason for the joy I have. While it is good to remember the reason for the season I think that so many people gloss over the statement “Jesus is the reason for the season” because they may not understand the full weight of what Christmas morning 2000 years ago was all about.
Luke 2:9-11
Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David!
You must realize what happened that morning. The angel proclaimed to the shepherds in the fields “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all the people. The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today”.
Why was the world in need of a savior?
Romans 3:9-19
9 Well then, should we conclude that we Jews are better than others? No, not at all, for we have already shown that all people, whether Jews or Gentiles, are under the power of sin. 10 As the Scriptures say,
“No one is righteous—not even one. 11 No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. 12 All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one.” 13 “Their talk is foul, like the stench from an open grave.
Their tongues are filled with lies.” “Snake venom drips from their lips.” 14 “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.” 15 “They rush to commit murder. 16 Destruction and misery always follow them. 17 They don’t know where to find peace.” 18 “They have no fear of God at all.”
19 Obviously, the law applies to those to whom it was given, for its purpose is to keep people from having excuses, and to show that the entire world is guilty before God.
Verse 19 says it all, “the entire world is guilty before God”. Each of us has lived a life of sin. Let me be more specific… if you have ever lied, ever cheated, ever stolen, ever committed any wrong you have rebelled against God and have missed the standard of what is required to have fellowship with God and are deserving of hell. This goes for each and every one of us. None of us have met the standard set forth in the law. We are in need of rescue; the world is in desperate need of a savior.
Christ was born into this world to live a sinless life and become a sacrifice to take our punishment for us. He was the only baby ever born to die. Jesus, the God-Man of Nazareth was born so that we would not have to receive the consequence of our sins. (Romans 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.).
Our situation is dire. We are desperate. There is no way we could earn forgiveness, there is no way we could ever meet the standard of perfection that it takes to be right with God. We need a savior. That is why we should remember not just the “reason for the season”, but the reason we wake each day. Remember this Christmas and every day of your life that Jesus was born to rescue us. He was born to sacrifice his life so that we would not have to face the consequences of our sins; the consequences that lead us to death and hell.
If you have any questions or feel like you need to talk at all you can talk to me by sending a message on the forums or even in game. I love you guys and pray that God would work in your lives each and every day to mold you into men and women after his own heart.
