Actually the way we did it was we would pass round the nominees, and people who wanted to vote would reply with a yes or no. If Yes outnumbers no, they are sweared in. Pretty basic, but ensures only those who aren't trashtalking and getting unpopular with their guildmates get selected. And odale, yep you can't let them get complacent. They can and will be voted down.
Now on about democracy. It wouldn't work in such a setting, or would be really hard to implement. What we're doing is electing leaders and sub-leaders and making sure everyone gets heard. Political experts can argue with me all day and night about democracy, and I don't understand politics lol so don't bother. Maybe I shouldn't drop the D bomb. I'll just restate simply: I like to know my voice is heard and it isn't someone making all the decisions without bothering about the concerns of the greater guild and having no one to represent my concerns.
And most of all, I want the power to vote up or down someone I feel may represent my views, and for or against big decisions. While ideal, it isn't possible to hold a poll on every little decision. Therefore, I put my trust in the leader I voted for to do a good job representing me. And if he doesn't, I will vote him down next time if there is someone better.
Amidst all this, there is a guild leader. I believe his job is to make battle decisions, and run the military side of things that require instant action. If he proves too unpopular, he should be replaced.
So for example, 100 enemies entered the system, and are beating down heavily on your POS. You don't want to hold a poll and ask who's gona lead, what everyone is going to fly. You fleet up, shut up and hold the line. Or the enemy has just entered a heavy battle somewhere else, now is an opportune time to launch your blockade units around their stargates. Go ahead and do it, you don't have time for a poll.
However, more long term ideals can be voted for between corp members. The decision to settle some area of space, to start a new series of research projects, to roll out 10 carriers this month or 1000 battleships, the tax rate to corp benefits ratio are such important matters that whoever is in charge should discuss with the populace. My corp holds regular meetings addressing the people's concerns and reads the forum for suggestions and comments, as well as help requests. That is enough democracy for me.
